You'll support English Teachers in providing classes and doing conversation with students of different ages (6-18y.o.) in Naples public schools.

On the Teaching English project, you will be placed in a public school in Naples where you will assist teachers in their daily English classes. You can expect to follow the local school curriculum and either assist the local teacher on your own or alongside another volunteer.

International Napoli Network (INN) is a cooperative that partners with local public schools and NGOs to provide resources that support health and welfare, environmental conservation, and education. Volunteers and interns are placed with partner NGOs and we support you and our partners during your placement.

Even if Legal Age in italy is 15 years old before leave school, the city of Naples has a high student drop-out rate (around 20%) with many children choosing to leave their education early in favor of finding work on the streets, where they can find jobs under the table or connected with criminal organizations activities. Families won't be persecuted if their sons are not attending schools, and some of the families don’t stimulate them enough to keep studying, sometimes they prefer them bring some money at home.

It's not just a matter of families and urban poverty: also the public system is failing in providing effective and stimulating programs and activities. In some areas of Naples, public schools do not have the means to offer extra-curricular activities to students or alternative applied ways of teaching.

As a volunteer on the Teaching English project in Italy, you will help address this gap by either assisting local teachers during the day at a public school, organizing activities and workshops to help children improve their English language abilities.

This program aims also to work on the Italian problem of the low level of the English language, the incapacity of communicating with different cultures. This program, thanks to the fact that students can meet people from different countries and cultures, is like a kind of new air in the school which can excite them and improve their motivation and the efforts they put into studying English.

Thanks to the help of volunteers they can realize that English is not just a subject in school, but a way to communicate with people coming from other parts of the World and a fundamental way to get opportunities to explore the world or get a job.

This project is well suited to volunteers who are passionate about working with young learners to help improve their English language skills, while also developing their interests and life ambitions.

On the Teaching English project, you will be placed in a public school in Naples where you will assist teachers in their daily English classes, and those placed on the after school program will provide extra-curricular English workshops for children aged from 4 to 18 years-old.

You can expect to follow the local school curriculum and either assist the local teacher on your own or alongside another volunteer.

After the initial orientation, you will usually have a morning shift at your placement and will work for approximately 4 hours per day. Please note that start times and daily workload depends on the school.

Start Dates

This program is not available during June, July, August and Spetmeber and during Christmas time (December 20th - January 6th).

Costs / Benefits

Accommodation, self catered breakfast, support and supervision by the local team are included in the fee. Also work insurance is provided by the organization.

Requirements

This project is well suited to volunteers who are passionate about working with young learners to help improve their English language skills, while also developing their interests and life ambitions.
Essential skills include an open-minded attitude and the desire to help others and learn from them. Knowledge of Italian is an asset, but not mandatory.

Amazing Experience!!!

Both schools I volunteered at were walking distance from the accommodation so there was little need to get the metro for the placements. Originally I had my worries about joining this program and how I would interact with both the teachers and the students of the high schools. However, after one day in the school it was clear this was not going to be a problem.

Of course a few students were not interested in learning but the vast majority were interested in improving their English while learning more about UK culture. It was really heartwarming as the weeks progressed to learn more about the students hobbies and aspirations. I find it especially important to give these young individuals the attention and respect they deserve as although there may be limited opportunity compared to other areas of Italy, it’s clear to me they all have the potential to achieve big things! Hopefully I was a small part in them gaining confidence in themselves and their views on who they could become in the future.

In terms of the lessons, there was a mix of both leading the lessons or just assisting. This is dependent on the teacher so bare that in mind when applying for the role.

I’d like to thank all the teachers who I worked with. My time spent with each teacher was great and many interesting and fun conversations took place. I would particularly like to thank Iiaria who’s energy and enthusiasm in the classroom cannot be understated. I particularly enjoyed the Jeopardy games we would play!

Overall, I would highly recommend this program to a native speaker looking to participate in a program that is beneficial for teenagers and their education while exploring the beauty of Naples and the south of Italy.

An amazing and unforgettable experience.

I had a fantastic experience with INN and within the placement they offered me. It was exactly as promised: a placement giving you the opportunity to help and support the teachers as well as the pupils/students. Also, I highly recommend staying within the accommodation; you will witness cultural exchanges like never before. On top of that, Ivan, one of the individuals in charge of the program, is always here for you: wether you need something regarding the volunteer work or you have an issue (personal or work related) or you just have question concerning Napoli (what to do, what to see...). This one-month experience really gave me the feeling that I belong in a country that I didn't know (first-hand) before. The southern Italians are really welcoming. I should point out as well that whomever you are, and as I talked about it with different people, you will never feel unsafe or alone in this city. Furthermore, the food is really good and affordable. I truly felt fully supported and welcomed.

An amazing experience

In October of 2023 I had the pleasure to spend 4 weeks in Naples helping teach English in a public primary school in an underprivileged neighborhood.

The experience was very rewarding in multiple ways. Firstly, I (like to) imagine that I contributed to making the kids feel more excited and confident to learn English. I specifically helped the kids and teachers with the pronunciation of words, going by the lessons in the book. Secondly, living in Naples and spending time in the school where the English level was very low made me learn some Italian. This jumpstart in turn gave me the confidence to continue learning Italian.

Lastly, living in the INN apartment with the other volunteers I got to know a lot of great people who I miss dearly now that I have left. Spending time with them exploring Naples and its surroundings, having food and drinks, and playing games really added to the experience.

Overall I had an amazing time and I want to thank Ivan for the good coordination and help.
