The area was originally created in the early 1990’s to accommodate an estimated population 3,000. Now home to around 40,000 people of diverse nationalities, most live in substandard conditions without basic amenities such as electricity, running water and proper sanitation. Volunteers working here will get a unique insight into how all these different African cultures come together to live side by side.

Unemployment is one of the biggest challenges facing the people of Mandela Park, but through sheer resilience and an overwhelming spirit of “Ubuntu” (ancient African word referring to the philosophy of Human Kindness and Compassion), they survive from day to day. Volunteer help is essential in the crèches to help care for the children, keeping costs to a minimum and allowing parents to work, or seek employment and work towards a brighter future. Many have had to flee their own countries and seek a better life for their families in South Africa.

Goals of this Project:

  • Provide quality child care to underprivileged children in the Imizamo Yethu township in Cape Town
  • Improve the future prospects of these children by providing a solid early childhood education, improving their educational prospects for the future
  • Boost the confidence and aspirations of marginalized children and their families
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange which benefits both students and international volunteers alike.
