Volunteers on our Projects Abroad Law & Human Rights programme will work alongside local staff and gain first-hand experience of human rights law in practice. Volunteers will work at the Projects Abroad Human Rights Office which is located in the Wynberg area of Cape Town.

Your role as a volunteer will be determined by your level of previous experience and any areas of interest you may have. We can accept volunteers of all level of experience from pre-university volunteers to qualified lawyers.

An average day may involve conducting interviews, doing research, providing legal advice and reviewing cases from walk-in clients. Office work is combined with field work in prisons, homes for victims of abuse, HIV / AIDS victim shelters and juvenile detention centres.

Volunteers can get involved in the running of human rights workshops, the distribution of educational pamphlets or documents, assisting refugees in processing their refugee status papers, and things like skill-building, CV development and mock interview workshops.
