Volunteers on this project will live on the 476-acre Taricaya Ecological Reserve, which is owned and run by Projects Abroad.

The primary aim of the project is to help the local ecosystem recover from previous disturbances, as well as to help local people avoid potential damage to the environment. Taricaya is increasingly recognised internationally as a research centre. It has contributed a number of important research papers at international conferences, especially in the field of ornithology (the study of birds). It has also been officially appointed the first Animal Release Centre in this part of South America.

The role of volunteers is varied, and includes:

  • Taking part in biodiversity studies and wildlife observations (birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and butterflies)
  • Working on the animal release programme
  • Helping to grow crops, such as coffee, cacao and chillies, on a pilot farm
  • Assisting staff with butterfly and turtle breeding programmes
  • Working on trail maintenance

We also have a Rainforest Conservation Project in Madagascar!
