We have had many people come and stay here for a working holiday at the sanctuary. People have come from all over Spain, UK, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and other places in the world. It´s a great way to learn about donkeys, spend time and get to know them and experience a different culture and climate. Also, it can be a great help to us to get the morning routine done more quickly so that we can spend more time grooming and walking our donkeys!

Everyone who has been with us ends up having their favourite donkey! As well as learning a lot about the work we do, we like to give Visiting Volunteers the opportunity to be involved in other regular things we do.

Sanctuary volunteers

You can either volunteer on a regular basis, or stay with us for a set period of time. Volunteers have to spend with us a minimum of three weeks time. It is also possible to carry out an internship with us, if linked to animal care, thus integrating yourself into the work of our charity. Work consists mainly of mucking out stables and feeding the animals, but there are also opportunities to groom or help the vets and farrier at work. Accomodation, meals and transport are to be assumed by the volunteer. However, we can provide some advice..

Welfare volunteers

Are you passionate about animal welfare? If so, and you have some time to spare, you could be one of our welfare volunteers. We are looking for people in different parts of the country who may be able to, on request, go and check on welfare cases, take photos and send us information about the animals to assess the situation before we send our welfare officer to take care of the situation. Any help will be most welcome.

Donkey assisted therapy volunteers

Volunteering for our donkey assisted therapy sessions is a truly rewarding task. You will be helping so the session runs smoothly, either by helping children on the donkeys or setting up the arena and clearing the area after the session. We are looking for people with a love for animals and children. Experience in working with children with additional needs is a plus. Ideally, we will need people who can do the volunteering on a regular basis, as these sessions take place every day.

E-volunteers

If you wish to help but you are unable to travel to us, there is still something you can do. You can also help by spreading the word and supporting the work of El Refugio del Burrito online. You may have a blog, or a website and may want to put a link to our website in there. You are always able to support our campaigns, both on our website or on Facebook, by signing on to them. You may even be able to help with translations if you have language skills. Or you may want to think of any other creative ideas to help our cause: organise fundraising events, do sponsored events.

A love for animals is essential. All volunteers must show the uttermost respect for both the animals and the staff at El Refugio del Burrito
