You will find most local people do not speak English so it is important, and also a way to make your experience more enjoyable/fun to learn some of the basics before departing.

This goes even if you are planning on joining a Nepal tour where you will get an English speaking guide, it is really fun to be able to converse with locals in their language.

Thouands of people travel and volunteer in Nepal every year too and again although local staff speak English it is recommend you try to pick up the basics.

Although it is impossible to learn the whole Nepali language in a short period we highly recommend learning some words and phrases, this will help when booking / buying things and also interacting with local people.
