Volunteer in Bangladesh

Bangladesh Volunteer

If you want a culture shock and get away from other tourists whilst being able to stay a little longer and make a real difference consider going to work in Bangladesh. The pace of life in Bangladesh is very slow, you should go in with an open mind and not let the little things frustrate you. Voluntourism in Bangladesh is growing every year and this country is going to attract more volunteer workers in the future, by applying now you will avoid the crowds and get an authentic experience.

Volunteering in Bangladesh is a really rewarding way to experience the country where you will get to meet friendly people, learn more about the culture and also give back. This country might be a bit of a culture shock but Bangladeshi people are very friendly by nature, most people can't speak English so it's a good idea to learn some basic words and phrases. If you volunteer in rural areas people will make you feel very special and the centre of attention.

Location of Projects

A lot of programs are located in the capital Dhaka and more rural towns and villages. This country is less developed compared to other Asia volunteering destinations, you might want to search our India volunteer page for more options.

Community Development

Bangladesh has a huge population, around 151,000,000 - one of the biggest in the world. A lot of people live in poverty and need assistance all year round. There are large international charities and local NGO's working to help people and move the country forward. Bangladesh has long had poor infrastructure and less tourists bring money in. There is a need for people to help with building, construction, healthcare and human rights programs. You can join short and long term projects

A lot of local NGO's work to help people excluded from the social and economic growth in Bangladesh or who suffer from poverty or who live in rural areas. Around 30 million people need help - a shockingly high number. Some projects involve working with discriminated and marginalised women and also indigenous tribes - this will be a rewarding experience. There are other programs with children and youth, helping them get a good education and find employment. You could also help in a medical capticity with the aim of stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS, helping disable people.

"I volunteered in a small rural village in Bangladesh for 3 months as part of the programme. Myself and 4 others worked with a team of 5 young local people, planning and delivering a series of workshops on topics such as gender equality, women's rights, child's rights, health and hygiene, education and the environment, to raise awareness on the importance of these issues within Bangladesh and on a global scale. Throughout the placement I grew more confident, and met so many amazing people along the way! We stayed with host families, local people who welcome you into their home and treat you like part of their famly! It is a life changing, once in a life time opportunity. It is a great way to experience a different culture, whilst gaining important skills that will not only help you in the future, but they also look great on your CV!" - Ciara Rooney volunteered in Bangaldesh with International Citizen Service

Health and Safety

Be sure to visit your doctor between 4-8 weeks before you depart and check needed vaccinations. Whilst in Bangladesh you might want to only drink bottles water (even when brushing your teeth).
