The primary role of a volunteer at our animal shelter in Phuket, Thailand is to socialise and walk the dogs and socialise the cats and puppies.

For dogs and cats at the shelter to be adopted into homes, it is essential to teach them to trust people and to teach the dogs to walk on a lead. Almost all of our animals are former street animals who have never been indoors and need to learn to feel comfortable around people. Socialisation is especially important for shy animals and those who have been abused. Many adopters say their new companions are very friendly and comfortable with them, even as soon as they arrive from Thailand – this is because of shelter volunteers.

We strongly encourage volunteers to spend a month or longer at our shelter. When volunteers stay for at least a few weeks, they build close relationships with the animals and can see them become more bonded to people. We particularly need volunteers who enjoy giving tours of the shelter and talking with visitors.

Many of our volunteers fall in love with one of the dogs or cats at our shelter and adopt them. If you can give a loving home to an animal in need, you might meet your new best friend!

Note: Soi Dog's shelter is open to volunteers from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with a lunch break from 12 to 1. (We're open to visitors until 3:30pm.) On your first day, please plan to arrive in time for a tour. Tours are at 9:30am, 11am, and 1:30pm.

Please contact us for more information about volunteering at the shelter, and email us again a couple days before you come to tell us what day and time you will arrive.
