Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary

Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary

Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and release of injured, sick and orphaned wildlife here in Costa Rica.

Our ultimate objective is to assist in the recovery and release of native wildlife. We also provide lifetime care to those that cannot return to the wild. We have a well-equipped veterinary clinic and employ a qualified and experienced veterinary team to provide high quality veterinary treatment to all animals.

Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary accepts volunteers from all over the world, who can commit to a minimum stay of 1 week and a maximum of 3 months. As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to work closely with animals that most people only dream of! You can help with food preparation, cleaning and feeding, providing environmental enrichment, clinical procedures, pre-release monitoring, behavior observation, record keeping, marketing, fundraising, maintenance and so much more!

The center is situated on a mountain in the heart of the jungle and is within walking distance of Villas Alturas Hotel which offers spectacular views of the South Pacific Ocean. Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary has enclosures for over 75 animals and was designed with the assistance of the Costa Rican government.

The wildlife we rehabilitate is cared for by our professional team of qualified staff. We also operate a dynamic volunteer program along with educational programs for local and national schools and international universities. Additionally, we provide guided sanctuary tours where you and your family can learn about the amazing wildlife of Costa Rica and the work that we do to protect it.

Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is a non-profit organization and every visitor, volunteer and donor directly helps provide food, housing and veterinary care to a diverse range of native animal species.

Loved this place!

Wonderful sanctuary. Beautiful place and the tour is fabulous and thorough. Some amazing animals despite the sad reasons they are there. Wonderful they plan to release as many as possible back into nature!

Highly recommend!

I had a fantastic experiences at the Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary! It was super informative and even though I’d been in Costa Rica for 6 months I saw animals I’d never seen before. We learned a lot about each of the animals and their histories. Each of them have a story about how they got there. I highly recommend visiting! It’s definitely worth it!

More than I expected..

Alturas wildlife sanctuary was a wonderful experience. I stumbled upon the sanctuary while staying in Uvita. The staff was extremely passionate and knowledgeable. I was able to receive answers to all of my questions and more! The animals come from varying backgrounds and it truly opened my eyes to not buying macaw feather jewelry, not taking pictures with monkeys, etc. I look forward to returning. Thank you!

A must see!

My family of five (three children under 13) absolutely loved Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary! If you ask us what our favorite thing to do in Costa Rica was, you will hear “the Wildlife sanctuary!” We love animals and learned so much while there about the black market trade and other factors causing the need for wild animals to be cared for and ultimately released (if possible). In fact, my 13 yr old son is now seriously considering a career in wildlife rehabilitation because of his experience at Alturas. I can’t recommend it enough, a definite must see when visiting the beautiful country of Costa Rica!

A Wonderful Sanctuary

My husband and I visited Alturas on our latest trip to Costa Rica. The Sanctuary is in a beautiful location on top of a hill. While we were waiting for our tour to begin we got to enjoy incredible views of the ocean. The staff and volunteers we’re extremely friendly and knowledgeable. We did a walking tour of the location and our tour guide explained the difference between the permanent residents and the rehab/release program. I work in the field of animal welfare in the US so I was very glad to learn more about their enrichment and sanitation protocols for their permanent residents. You are not allowed to interact with the animals who are scheduled to be released to limit their exposure to human contact. These animals are located in a more remote location of the property. Overall we had a wonderful experience learning about the unique species of animals and how they interact with the Costa Rican habitat. I loved this Sanctuary and will visit again!

I didn’t want to leave

I loved visiting this sanctuary! It was a beautiful facility tucked into a mountain side. Beautiful views of the ocean while you wait for your tour. The howler monkeys were eating mangoes in the trees around us. The animals were being well taken care of. Their stories can be heart breaking but now the are safe and happy. Oh, the best part the SLOTHS!!! Very cute and sleepy. There was a baby sloth Matilda learn to climb while we were there. I could have stayed for days. I also love Jimmy the blind kinkajou. Their rehabilitate and release program is fantastic. You can also donate to them through Amazon. Next time I’m back in beautiful Costa Rica I will visit this sanctuary again.

This place is amazing!

I’ve taken the tour 3 times, all were different but equally amazing. The staff are very friendly and you can really feel how much they love and care for the animals. They tell you the animals history and their treatment journey and plan. The location is unbeatable, on top of a mountain, inside the jungle, over-looking the ocean. I have seen many times whales in the water and they also have a wonderful restaurant if you wish to enjoy.
