Medical Volunteer Programs in Ghana

Make a Difference Through Medicine This Summer in Ghana. There’s a buzz at The Humanity Exchange as preparations are underway for the 2011 Medical Team. This August, a team of physicians, nurses, health educators, students, and general volunteers will provide healthcare to three impoverished communities. Motivated volunteers with a passion for healthcare are encouraged to apply.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support of Adamus Resources. Through their provision of logistical support, we are able offer an outstanding program to volunteers at an affordable cost.” says Allison Fedorkiw, Executive Director. Volunteers are based in the beautiful Axim Beach Hotel. Situated on Ghana’s coast, it boasts traditional style housing with modern amenities. In addition to volunteering, the team will visit the slave castle in Elmina for an up close look at the haunting history of the slave trade. They’ll also travel by dugout canoe to visit Nzulezu, a traditional stilt village, and walk the canopy bridges of Kakum National Park.

But it’s the opportunity to connect with local communities through volunteerism that The Humanity Exchange is most excited about. Western Region, where the program is based, has historically been one of the poorest areas of Ghana. There is a serious lack of access to healthcare. As noted by Kofi Adusei, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager for Adamus, “This program will make a huge impact in the communities.” The team will work together to treat ailments such as malaria, intestinal parasites, and sexually transmitted infections. Treatment will be complimented by health education to make a lasting impact. Volunteers will also have a tour of a local health facility for a an honest look into the realities of local healthcare. Member of Parliament for Evalwe-Gwira, Mrs. Katherine Afeku, and Regional District Health Nurse, Judith Okine, are in full support of The Humanity Exchange’s Medical Team and look forward to welcoming volunteers this August.

This fantastic two week program includes superb pre-departure and in-country support, accommodation, meals, all in-country transport, three tours, volunteer placement, and a donation to buy medications for only 950 CAD or 750 CAD for students.

On this once in a lifetime volunteer program, volunteers will receive a warm welcome into Ghanaian culture and the enjoy the beautiful coastal environment. The team will benefit from local connections, gaining a unique view into the realities of healthcare in impoverished rural African communities. Enjoy the experience as you grow and learn as part of a talented international team. We’d love to have you join us!
