USA Work and Travel Programs

BUNAC's Work America programme not only gives you the opportunity to experience the bright lights of the USA, but also offers the chance for you to supersize your CV and boost your bank account. So if you’re looking to escape the Great British summer’s annual dose of post-uni blues, overpriced festival beer and rainclouds calling off yet another barbeque, the USA may just be the perfect destination for a truly memorable summer!

Want to know more? BUNAC have put together this bite size guide to answer all your Work America Who, What, Where, When and Hows:

1. Who can go?

Any full-time student at a British or Irish university who is 18 years old by 1st June 2011.

2. What can I do?

There are hundreds of positions listed in BUNAC’s Job Directory, and it’s constantly being updated. Once you sign up to the programme, you’ll be able to view the directory and start sending off applications.

The Job Directory tends to advertise seasonal positions, such as work in cafés, in hospitality or at theme parks. If you’re looking for more career-related work we’d recommend securing one of these jobs while you look for work experience or an internship, which you could work in during your time off.

If you are unable to secure a job before you depart for the USA, or if you’d just prefer not to, our offices in the U.S will be able to assist you in finding work, an internship or work experience. You will not be permitted to work in childcare or in medicine.

3. Where can I go?

Pretty much anywhere!

The directory advertises jobs all over the USA. However, while it does include jobs in locations such as New York State and California, it can be really competitive to find work in these states, so we’d recommend looking elsewhere too. A lot of people find work on the east coast, in states such as Maryland.

4. When can I go?

Your visa will be valid for four months between May 1st 2011 and will expire on 10th October 2011, so you may work in the USA at any point during this time. You will also be issued with a 30 day tourist visa, which you can begin using when you finish work.

If you arrive in the USA after July 8th 2011 you must have a job a job pre-arranged.

The latest you can apply for the programme is 20th May 2011. However, if you do decide that you just can’t say no to the opportunity of spending a summer in the States, we’d strongly recommend applying for the programme as soon as possible in order to give yourself more time to apply for jobs. The directory is regularly updated, so constantly growing, but the more time you give yourself to apply for jobs, the more choice you’ll have.

5. How do I find accommodation?

A lot of the employers in BUNAC’s jobs directory offer accommodation. If this is the case, it will be clearly stated in the directory.

Accommodation can also be found through local listings, on Craigslist and at local universities. If you do not have accommodation arranged prior to arriving in the USA, our offices in the U.S will be able to help you find a place to live!

BUNAC also offer the opportunity to volunteer in the USA and to work at an American summer camp.
