Travel & Volunteer in New Zealand: Conservation Projects

New Zealand Volunteer Projects - By now you've all heard the devastating reports about the earthquake that hit the Christchurch region in New Zealand two weeks ago. The quake caused significant damage to roads and buildings - one of which was the office building of WAVA's partner organisation...

The earthquake almost two weeks ago (Tuesday 22nd February) measured 6.3 on the Richter Scale, and although smaller in magnitude than the 2010 earthquake (7.1 magnitude) that struck the same area less than six months earlier, this earthquake resulted in extreme catastrophes. The extent of damage cannot yet be determined, but the devastation includes major road and bridge damage, fallen building debris (including the spire of the famous Christchurch Cathedral), and sadly, multiple fatalities.

WAVA were relieved to hear that all their volunteers working in the Conservation Volunteer New Zealand projects were safe, as were the staff and project supervisors. Unfortunately there was significant structural damage to their partner organisation's office building, which has left the newly renovated office beyond repair.

Volunteers who are due to arrive in Christchurch, New Zealand in the following weeks can, if they choose be relocated to projects departing from Auckland, or even to projects in Australia (to help with the flood restoration). WAVA have spoken to all their volunteers due to travel out to New Zealand, and thankfully they are assured that their help is evermore important at this time.

In light of the recent disaster WAVA felt that as a responsible volunteering agency, they had to 'sound the horn' for volunteers at their Conservation Volunteer New Zealand programme. So, if you are thinking of doing some volunteering overseas, please keep New Zealand in mind for the future - it is a programme that needs considerable help from volunteers.
