Learn French & Volunteer in the Voodoo Capital of the World: Benin, Africa

Ouidah, Benin is a precious gem on the road less travelled. It is a tranquil city with a unique cultural edge; Ouidah is the heart of voodoo culture boasting a vibrant January festival and quirky local relics. Contrary to popular belief, voodoo is a practice of peace, love, and the value of tradition, and volunteer have the opportunity to learn about this fascinating culture in Ouidah.

The intrigue doesn’t stop there. From Ouidah, local people can guide you on the path to the Door of No Return, located several kilometres away on the beach. The tour traces the last steps of slaves brought from the interior before they crossed the ocean during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. This moving experience reminds us of a dark era, seemingly not so far in the past.

In Ouidah, you’ll live in The Humanity Exchange’s Volunteer House with other volunteers, and can compliment your volunteer program with language learning. Learn about exciting options including Eco Tourism Program Consultant, Educator for Trafficked & Vulnerable Children, and Public Health Educator on the Humanity Exchange website.
