Favela Volunteer Projects in Brazil

One World 365 would like to say congratulations to Oyster Worldiwde Brazil representative Jonathan Hannay, who has just been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s 2011 Birthday Honours for his work with children and young people in Brazil over the last 18 years.

Jonathan has spent the last 18 years working with young adults and children in the favelas of Sao Paulo. There he has set up a youth community centre, with the aim to give the kids a purpose and to get them off the streets. This initiative, which is run for the kids by the kids, has really succeeded in reducing crime in the area, and allows the children to have opportunities that may not have presented themselves otherwise. The kids get involved in the running of the centre, from running the library to organising any games or social events.

This official recognition of all of his hard work is a real achievement for Jonathan, and also for the centre, bringing it more to the foreground and encouraging people to take note of the problems that are still ongoing in the favelas of Brazil.

If you would be interested in working alongside Jonathan and the local community on volunteer projects in Brazil please contact Roger on roger@oysterworldwide.com or call +441892 770771.
