Are you a student?

This one’s simple! To be eligible for KAMP USA you must be a current student at a British or Irish university. This means that if you’re a student you could apply to either programme.

However, if you’re not a student, but you’re interested in working at an American summer camp, ask yourself the following questions. Summer Camp USA could be your ticket to a fantastic summer in the U.S!

Do you have experience of working with children in a supervisory role?

To be eligible for Summer Camp USA it’s really important that you have experience of working closely with kids or teaching a particular sport or activity. Coaching or teaching qualifications, for example a NPLQ lifeguarding qualification, really boost your chances of getting placed at camp!

KAMP USA participants are not required to have extensive experience of working with children. While it certainly helps if you’ve worked with kids before, it’s more important that you’re outgoing, social and enthusiastic. If you want to work with children in the future but don’t have much experience at the moment, this could be the perfect place to start.

Do you have experience of teaching a particular activity?

If you do, and you’ve taught your activity to children, you could be a great candidate for Summer Camp USA.

When you’re doing your Summer Camp USA application, or preparing for your interview, it’s really important to put yourself in the interviewer’s shoes. They’ll be trying to imagine how you’ll fit into a camp in terms of what skills and talents you can bring. This means that if you can present yourself as being able to teach a particular activity, the chances of finding a placement at camp will be hugely increased. If you can teach activities such as football or swimming, there a range of camps you would be able to work in, from religious camps to special needs camps. What are the ‘hot activities’ that camps look for?

If you don’t have experience of teaching an activity, don’t worry! KAMP USA could be a great programme for you. Summer camps are set up for all kinds of activities, so whether you want to try your hand at waterskiing or mountain biking, you’ll have full access to all the facilities your camp offers.

Do you want to work with children 24/7?

You might really want to work in a summer camp, have an activity to teach and have loads of experience of working with children – but do you want to work with them all day, every day?

Many people do, and for those people Summer Camp USA is a great option. You’ll work closely with kids on a daily basis, not only teaching them activities but also getting them up in the morning, looking after them all day and putting them to bed at night. It’s really rewarding work and amazing fun, but very tough!

The KAMP USA programme allows for plenty of interaction with kids – after all, you’ll be working on a children’s camp! However, working in the day-to-day running of the camp (which could involve working in the tuck shop, as kitchen staff or in the office) you’ll mainly be working with other students. There’s always great camaraderie between KAMP USA staff, and although they work very closely together there are also plenty of opportunities to spend time with the kids!
