Claire Howlett has just returned to the UK Projects-Abroad office after visiting Mozambique. The projects in Mozambique offer a great opportunity for volunteers to work in a country which has been described recently in the Guardian by the Mozambican writer Mia Couto as "a veranda that overlooks the Indian Ocean."

Furthermore 'what makes Mozambique so unique is that you still feel a genuineness that no longer exists in countries where tourism has been industrially developed.'

The projects are based in the coastal fishing village of Vilanculos, where volunteers have the opportunity to do Care projects, working in pre-schools or orphanages, Teaching adults extra English and also Conservation work around the beautiful islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago. The waters around Vilanculos are home to the Dugong, a docile and gentle sea mammal under threat by the local fishermen. Volunteers on the Conservation project will dedicate their time to tracking and monitoring this unique and endangered sea creature. Claire said how she thought nobody would believe her when she showed people the photographs she took out there of the luscious clear-water coastline because they would think the photographs were 'glossing them up.' Well maybe seeing is believing!
