Malawi Meaningful Volunteer & Travel Opportunities
Travel to Africa and take a gap year / career break in Malawi to volunteer and teach. Malawi is a landlocked country in southeast Africa that was previously known as Nyasaland. It is bordered by Tanzania to the north and Mozambique which surrounds it on the west, east and the south. It also has a border with Zambia in the northwest. Lake Malawi divides Tanzania to the North and Mozambique to the south east. The highest points in Malawi are located in the Mt Mlanje region 7,000 feet (2,100 m) and 10,000 feet (3,000 m).
Lilongwe is known as the garden city, it is surrounded by very colourful flowering trees that complement the new modern architecture. Lilongwe has both and old and new town. The old town is based around the old Lilongwe village whereas the new town is based around newly developed commercial buildings. Lilongwe's city centre is home to its nature sanctuary which is rich in wildlife, exotic flowers and rare wild plants. Capital hill is the seat of power. Full of important government buildings and institutions, it is set amid wooded slopes of indigenous trees and is surrounded with restaurants, shops and cinema theatres.
Sub Saharan Adventures offer volunteering programmes in Malawai and Africa.
Volunteer Activities
Sub Saharan Adventures are looking for volunteer teachers who will help with the running of the school in class as well as in its offices. Malawai is in need of volunteers in the secondary and primary department.
When at the school, the volunteers will be working together with all members of staff as one family in the planning of daily and monthly activities. We strongly believe that with the involvement of the volunteers, there will be sharing of knowledge and resources and we know the difference your expertise and experience will make to the school.
Why The Need For Volunteers in Malawi?
Education is seen as a privilege in Malawi and was reserved until recently for the wealthy families. In recent years schools have in theory been made free, however they still need funding to survive and consequently have asked for scholar subscriptions. This is why it is essential for volunteers to help within these schools, to give kids the opportunity to learn and to gain the education they deserve.
Volunteer Required Skills
When teaching in Malawi, your primary and main role will be to teach English to the kids. Sub Saharan encourages extracurricular activities usually proving to be extremely popular at the school, in particular sports and activities that raise awareness of environmental issues in relation to the communities.
Accommodation In Lilongwe
Your accommodation will vary from time to time, but you will most likely live with a local family. This gives you the best opportunity to experience the true African way of life from the inside and not as a ''tourist'' which only allows you to see the country on the surface.
Sub Saharan Adventures always try to accommodate you as close to your project as possible, so you are able to walk to work. This is not possible all of the time but there is a great alternative at hand, the ''Minvan'' or as we know it the mini bus. They are all over Malawi so you will have no problem getting around
Volunteer Reviews For This Project
'I had an excellent time at Kaps School and in Malawi, It was not how i expected it at all! I think i have the African Bug i will going back as soon as i have the money, everyone should be given the opportunity to travel around Africa like this' (Mark Peters, UK)
'This is a wonderful school which was not long ago built from scratch, unfortunately it is still with its problems. Robbers keep stealing classroom windows being one of them. I had a great time helping out at the school and i hope they benefited from me as much as i did from them.' (Maddy Smith, UK)
