General FAQ

About Us

When did One World 365 start?

One World 365 started in 2006 as a site to help people find placements and work at summer camp. Since then we have expanded to accomodate volunteering, teaching, study, travel/tour and seasonal work opportunities.

Who runs One World 365?

Two brothers run One World 365 from the UK - founder and director Paul Edwards (23years) and his brother Steve (32years) who does development work on the sites.

Why is One World 365 different?

We offer everyone the opportunity to a free basic listing in our directory - this includes charities, NGO's, non-profits and small organistaions worldwide.

We also feature organisations and placements offering a comprehensive and accessible package - taking care of all your travel, accomodation, meals and sharing the benefits of their valuable experience.

Our focus is on ethical companies who offer experiences that bring benefit to people, animals and the environment.

Our network of sites brings together an extensive and varied database of organisations with a worldwide audience seeking a work, volunteer or travel experience.

How are you funded?

One World 365 runs on a shoestring charging a modest fee for enhanced and sponsored listings. The revenue this creates is channelled into marketing, covering essential costs including hosting and initiatives aimed to improve our services and grow the project.

We don't currently receieve any corporate or institutional funding and we aren't affiliated with a commercial backer.

Are you affiliated with specific Companies / Operators?

We are a completely independant service.

Placements / Jobs / Volunteer Opportunites

Do your offer placements?

We don't provide travel, work or voluntary opportunities ourselves - we offer extensive listings and information on organisations who can help you.

Do you charge a commission / referal fee?

No, booking, prices and all specific arrangements are to be negotiated directly.

I'm looking for a job / Can I send you my CV?

We don't hold a database of CV's or offer a job matching service. You should contact advertisers directly with your resume.

How do I find feedback on placements/jobs?

We have people on our popular forums who have worked and volunteered abroad, they are the best source of advice and will be happy to advise

How do I apply for a job?

View the placement or company profile and click the Apply Now link or visit the company website directly

Why should I pay to volunteer?

Not all volunteer projects require payment, many will gladly (and freely) accept your time and efforts particularly if you have specifc skills and experience. Certain opportunities we feature for example seasonal work offer payment. That said many of the projects listed on the site have costs to cover and money you pay will often be used to bring real benefit to the communities and habitats in which they operate.

House Rules

Are listings on your site checked?

We review each listing before it appears on our sites. While we do our best to undertake certain checks we rely on the community of visitors who use our sites to assist us in regulating the listings. If you feel we are doing something wrong in offering a specific listing then talk to us.

Can anyone get a listing?

Firstly, we only advertise organisations who offer work, volunteer, teaching, study or travel experiences. Secondly it is not acceptable to offer activities that may be considered to be illegal, abusive, exploitative or unethical. Any listings found to be in breach of these general guidelines or contrary to the spirit of the terms in our legal disclaimer will be removed from the site.

I'm worried that an Organisation is inappropriate...

Occasionally we are contacted by individuals who have reason to believe that an organisation listed on our sites may be unsuitable or inappropriate. In this case we will liase with all parties to reach a satisfactory conclusion and may if necessary remove any inappropriate listing.

Do you moderate the forums?

We hope that our forums and the community of people worldwide who use them will be self regulating. While we keep an eye on postings we rely on our users to flag up any inappropriate content which we reserve the right to remove.

Technical Stuff

What runs the 365 site network?

We rely on world class open-source software to run our service. Currently our infrastructure is based around FreeBSD / Apache 2 / Qmail / PostgreSQL / PHP / PYTHON / C++ with XHTML / JavaScript / CSS. We do development on an Ubuntu Linux machine in Eclipse and Vi using tools like subversion to manage the code. The sites are monitored on an iPhone which alerts us to any problems.

Originally we built a prototype of the service as a funky cutting edge AJAX application which was neat and whizzy but didn't get us picked up by Google. Since then we've moved to a simpler more SEO friendly "restful" architecture where each resource has a direct url.

Where are the sites hosted?

On a big highly available server farm in the US with redundant fast connections into the internet backbone.

Availability

We monitor availability and aim to provide 99% uptime. Occasionally we need to take the sites down for upgrades or maintenance and when this happens will will do our best to keep our clients and visitors informed as to progress.

Browsers

Our code should be compatible with popular IE / Firefox (mozilla) and Safari browsers. We aim to be WAI level 2 compliant for accessibility but probably have a bit of work to do on this.

Our site will then retrieve a copy of these images, handle resizing and store a copy on our webserver.

Yes of course - we welcome listings in any language. We recently moved our pages to UTF8 encoding meaning that most characters will render and be stored correctly.

How our search works

When a profile is listed on our sites we add all keywords to our index. When you search a specific term, our search engine finds results and pages that are most relevant to your search term. These results are then displayed in the search results page with priority given to sponsored results.

Why do some results appear above others?

Organisations that have upgraded to an enhanced or sponsored listing enjoy prioritised search results. Contact us for more info
