Volunteer in a marine project that is committed to researching the lifestyle and behavioural patterns of marine animals, whilst creating awareness of marine conservation within the local community and its tourists.
Famed for being the best place in the world to observe great white sharks, Gansbaai is ideal for volunteers wanting to immerse themselves in the challenging world of marine conservation whilst discovering the beauty of South Africa's Marine wildlife. In this fishing village located on South Africa's Garden Route, you will be required to analyse shark behaviour and their habitat, on top of educating the local community and its tourists on the importance of environmental conservation.
Using a boat or underwater cage, this programme allows you to watch and monitor Great White sharks in their natural environment and learn about coastal ecosystems and the work that is needed to preserve them.
This is a hands-on project that actively benefits the conservation of a range of marine species, from sharks to seals, dolphins and marine birds, whilst providing you with an insight into the challenges of ocean conservation.
Minimum duration is 4 weeks, with a maximum stay of 12 weeks. It is possible to extend your stay on a week-by-week basis. The project start dates are flexible, so volunteers are free to start on any day of the week. Please aim to arrive in South Africa on a Sunday in order to start you placement on the Monday.
Minimum age 18 yrs
No specific animal or marine skills are required, as all training will be given on site. You will need to be reasonably fit and able to be out all day.
