Construction Volunteer: Build a new Orphanage for Children in Uganda

Help construct a home that will provide shelter, safety, and comfort to children that have been adversely affected by HIV/AIDS.

General Info

There's a lot to do in Uganda right now. After decades of torment from various political regimes, Uganda has suffered from poor health, poor education, government corruption and an insurgence of HIV/AIDS cases.

Whilst it remains one of the poorest countries in the world, construction projects like this one are a concrete way for volunteers to help tackle the poverty crisis and rebuild lives that have been scarred by war and injustice. This is exactly what two of WAVA’s volunteers have decided to do. In 2009 after volunteering at our HIV Orphanage Programme, Uganda, Lucy and Sophie were so moved by the plight of the orphans in the area that they decided to donate money to fund this new construction project (due to begin in August 2010) which, will result in the construction of a larger orphanage for the children.

Why they need your help...
This programme is a one-off Ugandan-build project that is urgently needed. Currently the orphanage at our HIV Orphanage Programme, Uganda project can only hold approximately 20 children, however, there are many more children in the area that desperately need a home. With your help, this new orphanage will be able to house up to 40 children. These children are currently living in rented accommodation and have either been infected by HIV/AIDS or have lost parents to the disease.

The project is extremely understaffed with only two semi-qualified young men and four support staff helping the construction project. The project relies on you to share your experiences and knowledge in building construction, it thrives on the aid of all its volunteers aspiring to learn key construction skills which will facilitate the training of hundreds of young people, thus benefiting the local community.

Requirements:

- All participants with construction skills can apply for this project. You will be asked for a CV and other supporting documents to prove your suitability.
- Minimum age limit is 18 years.
