Work at an Elephant Orphanage near Colombo

Volunteers on this program will be placed at an elephant orphanage near Colombo, Sri Lanka. Here elephants are treated for ailments as well as fed and taken care of.

Sign up to volunteer at a Sri Lankan Elephant Orphanage with Volunteering Solutions. The wildlife orphanage has been open more than 30 years and is home to about 70 elephants. Volunteers will be given a chance to see elephants up and close, working alongside local organisations.

 

Volunteers will help to:

• Clean the animal/ elephant enclosures
• Keep the elephants environment clean (by mucking out the living area)
• Clean the garden and assisting in landscape work
• Help with the upkeep of the orphanage Under supervision of the Mahouts you might be asked to help bathe the elephants in the river

A typical volunteer in this program will work for 4-5 hrs in a day and help the local staff to clean, bathe, and feed the elephants. All the activities will be supervised (the elephants can sometimes get aggressive). Set in a small town not far from Colombo, the elephant orphanage is surrounded by hills and lush green forest, making work and volunteering experience like no other.
