Helping disadvantages in Mekong Delta, Vietnam

Company : Volunteer Vietnam
Location : Da Nang city, Vietnam
Duration: 3 weeks to 3 months
Approx Costs: 750 to 2500 $ Dollars (US)

The Volunteer Vietnam Mekong Delta program takes place in Vi Thanh city in the heart of the Mekong Delta. Volunteers will be immersed in the traditional Vietnamese lifestyle while having access to weekend getaways such as Ho Chi Minh City or the tropical Phu Quoc Islands.

The program is made up of three projects – our care and enrichment project at Hoa Mai Halfway Home for Children,  our English teaching project at Bui Thi Xuan primary school, and our work with the residents at the local Social Support Center . Volunteers will contribute to all three projects during their stay.

Hoa Mai Halfway Home is located in southern Vietnam in the heart of the Mekong Delta. The Halfway House is home to 50 abandoned children in Vi Thanh city, Hau Giang province . Although many have heartbreaking stories, they remain joyful and eager to learn. Due to underfunding the center is not able to provide adequate care and education to these children – and that’s where Volunteer Vietnam comes in! With this program volunteers provide a variety of educational and enrichment activities to the kids, including:

  • Teaching basic English
  • Educating the children about personal and environmental hygiene
  • Organizing recreational activities and games for the kids
  • Teaching art, music, and sport workshops

The school runs an illiteracy program for 100 underprivileged children whose parents must travel to work at another place to make living for the families. The children live with their grandparents or other relatives. There are only 02 teachers at the school and volunteers are needed to help them teach the children. Volunteers are expected to assist with the following programs:

  • Teaching basic English
  • Organizing recreational and sport activities and games for the kids

This Volunteer Vietnam program gives volunteers the opportunity to enrich the lives of the men and women who live at the Social Support Center.  There are around 200 residents who live in the center and they are only provided with the basics for living with no meaningful activities to help them pass the day.  We visit the center once a week and plan fun activities, whether it’s playing sports with the men or making bracelets with the women.  We may organize an outing with them as well, taking them to a pagoda or out for coffee.

They rarely see visitors and are very appreciative of any attention given to them.  Our visits there bring many smiles and laughter and you will feel like you have a made a difference to their lives by spending time with them and showing that you care.
