The Endangered Species Monitoring Programme is a conservation orientated project based in Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. Volunteers spend their time on three different reserves Mkhuze, Pongola and Thanda to help the survival of endangered species such as elephant, buffalo, wild dog, cheetah, leopard and one of the few surviving, original populations of black rhino.
As a conservation volunteer, you will be providing essential hands on assistance, contributing directly to conservation and the success and survival of these animals.
You will assist with day to day activities alongside your wildlife monitor. You'll spend your time working between all three reserves;
Thanda Reserve - Close monitoring lion, cheetah and hyena and incidental monitoring of wild dog and white rhino as seen
Tembe - Monitoring large herds of elephant and black rhino
Mkhuze - Monitoring Wild Dog, black rhino and white rhino, cheetah, hyena, vultures
You may also have the opportunity to be involved in;
Capture and relocation of animals being introduced to the reserve
Collaring game for montring purposes
Game Counts

Where do I Stay?
You'll stay within the Game Reserves and will be rotated every two to four weeks, depending on the length of your stay. Volunteers will share a room or at times camp out. The facilities are basic but are adequately equipped with hot and cold water, fridge/freezer, oven, shower and toilet. Groceries will also be provided for you to cook your own meals. From your camp, the nearest town is a 40 minute drive. Transport will be provided into town approximately every 2 weeks.
