The Endagered Species Monitoring Programme is a conservation orientated project based in Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa.
The reserve is home to elephants, buffalo, wild dog, cheetah and one of the few surviving original populations of both black and white rhino. The programme was initiated to monitor the progress of re-introduced endangered species, along with black and white rhino.
As a conservation volunteer, you will be providing essential assistance on the project, contributing directly to conservation and the success of these endangered species.
What will I do?
You will assist with day to day activities with your project leader. Exclusive hands-on field experience will provide you with an opportunity to expand your life experiences beyond what would be possible for an average tourist visiting a game reserve. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals who share our passion for wildlife and conservation.
You'll spend your time tracking and locating Wild Dog, Cheetah, Elephant, Buffalo, Black and White Rhino. Information such as location and behaviour and of individuals will be recorded from each and every sighting.
You may also be lucky enough to assist in game counts, radio collaring of game, leopard tracking, alien plant control, bird ringing, community conservation work and the capture, relocation and reintroduction of various animals.
A maximum of two volunteers at any one time is allowed on the programme, to ensure you are making a significant contribution to this project. The reserve is one of the countries oldest and is part of a world heritage site, the Greater St Lucia Wetlands Park.
The reserve is within close proximity to the coast where various other activities are available such as scuba diving, whale watching, turtle tours and deep sea fishing. The reserve is approximately 2 hours from Mozambique.
2008: We still have availability for October and November!!! 2009: Feb, March, April, May, June, July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov
Accommodation Three meals a day Transfers to and from Richards Bay Airport Activities and training on whilst on the project
