The sanctuary you'll assist is home to many different wild and domestic animal species. On this worthwhile and necessary Project, your work will be assisting, feeding and looking after the wildlife.

The sanctuary you'll assist is home to many different wild and domestic animal species and about 150 different species of birds. Most of the animals were taken in because they had been badly injured, abused or orphaned, and some are 'unwanted pets'. On this very worthwhile and necessary Project, your work will assist in hand-rearing, feeding and looking after the wildlife, as well as many other chores in the Sanctuary.

LOCATION:

The Sanctuary and its attached Wildlife Park is situated 50 km south west of the city centre of Port Elizabeth, on the Eastern Cape’s sunshine coast. It is set on 1000 hectares of superb bush and grassland. There is easy access to some stunningly beautiful beaches which are not to be missed.

WHAT YOU'LL GAIN FROM DOING THIS PROJECT:

► An exciting, never-to-be-forgotten adventure into South Africa.
► You'll lealrn an enormous amount about rearing and caring for different types of wildlife and birds.
► New skills, more confidence, a greater understanding of a different culture, invaluable personal and professional development.
► An entry on your CV or résumé that will put you head and shoulders above most others in the job market
► The enormous satisfaction of helping abused and orphaned animals and knowing that you made a difference to their quality of life
► And best of all ... an unforgettable experience!

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Work on this project ranges from hands-on with the animals, to helping and guiding the tourists or assisting in the restaurant and bar. Some of your work will also include general chores in the Park itself. Some of your responsibilities may include the following:
• Food preparation for all the animals and birds. You'll learn which animals eat what food, how to prepare it and and how much to give them.
• Hand rearing of orphaned wildlife, including birds.
• Mucking out and tidying enclosures, and, when necessary, helping to expand existing enclosures or constructing new ones.
• Collecting data on wildlife within the game reserve section of the park. This will include, for example, monitoring the movements of wildlife and occasionally doing game counts, depending on what is required at the time you're there.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITES YOU CAN DO WHILE ON THIS PROJECT:

► A 5- or 7-day Safari from Cape Town up the renowned Garden Route: Taking in Dolphin and Whale Spotting, visits to many tourist attractions, such as a visit to a brewery(!), the Bloukrantz Bungy Jump (reportedly the highest in the world), and a guided tour of the Cango Caves.
► Surfing Courses: In the buzz city of Durban.
► Paragliding Course: Soar over the impressively beautiful Drakensburg Mountain. You'll get a licence at the end of the course which qualifies you to do solo paragliding around the world.
► 5-Day Bush Survival Course: This is a fantastic experience and opportunity to see lots of wild animals in their native habitats in Game Reserves. You'll learn a lot and you'll really enjoy learning some bush skills in the great outdoors!

This project can also be combined with any of our other projects in South Africa. That way you’ll get a good knowledge of two or more very different regions of the country.
