Observe experts and learn how they work. We have a choice of hotels to work in, including one of Africa's most prestigious hotels and a particularly beautiful Hotel situated in the vibrant V&A Waterfront.

Your duties will be as varied as possible to enable you to learn about the various areas involved in hotel management and catering practice. You will be supervised and part of your learning experience will be to shadow various members of staff in their day-to-day duties and routines.

If you haven't completed your degree, you'll be treated as a staff member in training, but this should also be a wonderful opportunity to experience the operational running of a busy international hotel. You'll live on-site and become one of the team that runs this quality hotel.

As with all our Work Experience placements, we will endeavour to tailor the project to suit your specific requirements to ensure you gain the maximum benefit and experience. We’ll have detailed discussions with you to ascertain what you’re looking for. The experience you gain will be invaluable to you in the future and totally different to what you're used to in your home country.

YOUR WORK:

The type of work you'll do will depend very much on how we arrange your placement to suit your own requirements or preferences. For example, if you would like to gain more experience on the day-to-day running of the hotel side, we arrange for you to spend a greater portion of your time in the Rooms Division. This would include working on the switchboard, in the reception, reservations and in housekeeping, with possibly a some nights doing audit duties. If your preference is to gain more experience of the catering side, we arrange for you to have adequate time working in the Food and Beverage Division.

LOCATION:

Both hotels are within very easy reach of the restaurants, pubs, theatres and shops that make up part of the V&A Waterfront that is part of Cape Town harbour. They neighbour the CBD and also lie within easy reach of the main routes to the beaches, mountain walks and city hotspots, as well as the airport.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO WHILE ON THIS PROJECT:

• A 5- or 7-day Safari from Cape Town up the renowned Garden Route, taking in Dolphin and Whale Spotting, visits to many tourist attractions, such as a visit to a brewery(!), the Bloukrantz Bungy Jump (reportedly the highest in the world), and a guided tour of the Cango Caves
• Surfing Courses: In the buzz city of Durban.
• Paragliding Course: Soar over the impressively beautiful Drakensburg Mountain. You'll get a licence at the end of the course which qualifies you to do solo paragliding around the world.

Travellers' placements are very flexible and you can combine this project with any other Travellers project, either in the same country or in different countries.

Costs / Benefits

Costs vary depending on length of placement, but starts at £795 for two weeks. You can participate for up to one year, subject to visa requirements.
Included is full support from the moment of booking and throughout your placement to your return home. There are support staff 24/7 in all our destinations worldwide and a 24 hour emergency international telephone line direct to the Head Office. All meals are provided, unless otherwise stated. Accommodation is provided (whether a rented house, a hotel/hostel, homestay, apartment or flat).
You’ll be met at the nearest airport on your arrival by our in-country manager who will take you to your accommodation and give you a full induction into the area. He/she will also be on call 24/7 and you’ll see them frequently.
Pre-departure you’ll receive comprehensive information about every aspect of your placement and necessary preparations, ranging from what to pack, to visa information, to what to do on your weekend travel in the country. Your safety, well being and happiness throughout your placement are our primary concerns and we will keep in touch with you throughout. International flights not included.

Requirements

Qualifications depend on which placement you choose. Some don't require any qualifications or experience and some others would prefer some experience. Please speak to us so that we can help you choose the placement that is right for you and will give you the most beneficial experience. All placements do require you to have initiative, adaptability and patience (and a good sense of humor helps!)
