BRAZIL: Coach Sports to School Children in stunning Florianopolis Island

Company : Travellers Worldwide
Location : Florianopolis Island
Duration: 2 weeks to 3 months
Approx Costs: 1000 to 2500 £ Pound (UK)

Coach children from local communities at NGO’s or public schools. You'll help with different types of sports, such as football, volleyball, basketball, handball and tennis.

Summary: You'll work at NGOs and Public Schools. You'll assist the Sports teachers in their regular lessons, introducing your culture and sports specialities from your country. This is an exciting opportunity to also develop your own coaching project, sharing your sports techniques, games played in your country, different styles, anything that can add to the teachers' and students' practice.

The local teacher and coordinator will be there to help you with planning and practicing the lessons. The children are all so eager to learn from the foreign volunteers!

This placement will add substantially to your CV or Résumé.

At the NGOs you are likely to be working with up to 100 children aged 7-15 and you can help coach mainly, but not only, football and tennis. You'll work at different centres during the week with each session lasting 3.5 hours per day.

At the public schools sports lessons are part of the school curriculum. There are approximately 700 students at the schools aged between 6 and 16 years-old. They are all from the local community and don't pay anything to attend the school.

There are approximately 35 children per class and they practice general sports, such as volleyball, basketball, handball and football. Sometimes they practice only one type in the whole week, sometimes more than one type in a day, depending on each teacher’s way of lesson planning.

Some schools still don’t have an indoor court, so sometimes if it's raining, the lessons take place inside the classroom and then students play board games or other activities planned by the teacher.

The period of regular lessons is 4 hours long and children attend either the morning or afternoon sessions. The mornings start at 8.00am and finish at midday and the afternoon session is 1.00pm to 5.00pm.

Sports are taught in the mornings and afternoons on 4 days of the school week, to different groups of children, so the main teacher has in total 32 hours of teaching per week. You can work fulltime – 4 mornings and 4 afternoons – or choose some mornings and some afternoons, if you prefer having more free time to explore the city.

You’ll assist the Sports teacher in regular lessons, introducing your culture, motivating students to learn about it, playing with the children, presenting new possibilities. You are also welcome to develop your own coaching project, being the “main teacher” in this case. Anything that you can contribute to the students’ development and interest in learning is welcome.

You'll stay at a warm and welcoming hostel in Lagoa de Conceição in the heart of Florianopolis; a 30 minute walk from the nearest beach and just 3 seconds from the lake! With friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere, you are sure to feel at home as soon as you step inside.

There is a communal living area with a TV, sofas, a pool table and you can also hire bicycles at reception. There are shops, supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies, banks, cafes, everything you might need are right on your doorstep. Buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to other parts of the Island and its 42 spectacular beaches!

There is FREE Wi-Fi / Internet available throughout the accommodation.

FOOD: At your accommodation you will be provided with breakfast. This usually consists of coffee, milk, bread, cheese and fruits, setting you up for the day ahead. You will need to budget for your lunch and dinner, but with an array of shops, supermarkets and restaurants nearby, you'll have a lot of choice for eating out. You can also choose to buy ingredients and prepare your own home-cooked meals at the Hostel. The kitchen is well equipped and there are all the usual facilities for meal preparation.

Travellers Worldwide BRAZIL: Coach Sports to School Children in stunning Florianopolis Island Reviews

My Review of Volunteering in Brazil with Travellers Worldwide

In 2014 I volunteered in Rio de Janeiro and arranged the trip through Travellers Worldwide. I can’t praise this experience enough. Everyone should volunteer in a country where you don’t have a common language at least once to start with. It makes the experience incredible. I worked for five months and really got in to the day routine, got to know the staff and children properly, still in touch with them today.

I was made to feel very welcome and felt like it made a difference having me there. Even after my work hours and during the weekends the staff would invite to join them several time for different events. My volunteer coordinator, Karen was fantastic. I felt more like we became friends rather than a professional relationship. Even after I was done working in the kindergarten, and technically had no rights to her service, she still helped if there was something I needed. I met other volunteers, staying for 3-4 weeks. To me, that little time seemed like a waste of time. That’s not enough time at all. 3 months should be a minimum!
