PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Practice was established in 1985 and within three years won the first of its many awards. They are engaged in a wide range of projects within Australia and the South-East Asia - Asia Pacific region. Their work embraces Architecture, Urban Design, Interiors. (Equally importantly, they're very welcoming and friendly - typical Australian traits!) These projects include Master-planning of Marinas, Waterfront and Golf Resorts, Urban Master-planning, Commercial and Mixed Use buildings, Retail, Medium Density Residential, Sport and Recreation, Entertainment, Resorts – Health, Spa and Tourism, Educational and Civic Buildings, Low Cost Housing, Space Planning and Interiors.

The Architects Practice has a wide-range of top-tier repeat clients which includes education, health, science, university, multiple residential, commercial, retail, sport and recreation. They undertake projects which range from $5M to major multi-stage mixed use redevelopment projects totalling $800M. The majority of current work is in the $50 to $100M range.

As students work directly for the designers and Directors, they experience high end projects, primarily at the conceptual design phase. In addition to the pure architectural and interior design projects, they also undertake urban design master-planning for the State Planning Authority and for Local Government where they assist with social infrastructure planning, strategic planning needs assessments and have developed a reputation for establishing design benchmarks for a range of community projects.

The Architects Practice also have a strong involvement in development in the north-west regions of Western Australia which requires a specific design approach to address remote location logistics, climatic extremes and cyclones. Much of this remote area design involves prefabricated building technologies.


WORK CONTENT

Working overseas is a challenging yet wonderfully rewarding experience and this placement will give you excellent hands-on experience of working with a well-established a highly reputable architecture and design practice. This type of work experience is a great way of enhancing your CV or résumé and making you stand out from the crowd in this increasingly competitive world.

ARCHITECTURAL STUDENT ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

To provide design presentation support to the core design team with a combination of high order computer presentation skills in using programmes such as Autocad, Photoshop, 3D Studio Max, Revit, Sketch-up and the like.
Students also may undertake a general design assistant role for the Directors of the the firm. This is particularly beneficial for students in gaining an insight into all aspects of architectural practice.

Students are often given opportunities to lead the co-ordination of selected aspects of projects, such as compilation of an approvals submission, illustration of presentation concepts or the reproduction co-ordination of a design competition entry.


STAFF AND WORKING HOURS

There is a team of around 10-15 people and working hours are around 9-5 but may vary depending on circumstances. The type and depth of work you'll be involved in will depend on your own skills and abilities and on the length of your project - if you're there for a longer period, you'll have more opportunities to get involved in projects than if you're there for the minimum period of 8 weeks.

Perth is currently going through a construction boom so you should have plenty to get involved in. Example of the types of computers packages you could be exposed to include:
• 3D package
• AutoCAD
• Sketch Up
• 3D Studio Max

Please note that this project is not available during December and January. Also, the work that you'll be involved in depends on what is available at the time of your placement.

ACCOMMODATION

Your accommodation is located in the CBD (Central Business District) of Perth, Western Australia. Therefore you are very central, close to the main train station and shopping district. You'll live with other Travellers volunteers in a very friendly and relaxing Lodge which is ideal for long-term stays. You may have your own room or you may share a room with other volunteers. There is an excellent kitchen and storage area for cooking meals and plenty of space to relax.

Entertainment at your accommodation currently includes a pool table, cheap internet access, arcade machines and cable TV (Foxtel), to name a few. But with all the sunshine Perth has, you’ll be out and about enjoying the many outdoor activities! You are literally a stroll from the Swan River and free CBD transport. Trains and buses are also only a few minutes away to take you to Fremantle, King’s Park or to the many other ‘things to do’!


LOCATION:

The Practice offices provide a modern, open-plan work environment. Their staff are predominantly in the 25 to 35 age group, but they have a full cross-section of age, cultures and experience. The West Perth location is a premium office precinct on the western side of the Perth CBD. It is located on major bus routes, a 10 minutes walk from the train station and the vibrant cafe precinct of Subiaco is a 15 minute walk. A free bus system operates throughout the CBD and connects with all public transport nodes.

Available all year round. Our placements are very flexible, you can choose your own start and finish dates.

Costs / Benefits

Costs vary depending on length of placement, but starts at £2595 for 8 weeks. You can participate for up to 24 weeks, subject to visa requirements.

Included is full support from the moment of booking and throughout your placement to your return home. There are support staff 24/7 in all our destinations worldwide and a 24 hour emergency international telephone line direct to the Head Office. All meals are provided, unless otherwise stated. Accommodation is provided (whether a rented house, a hotel/hostel, homestay, apartment or flat).

You’ll be met at the nearest airport on your arrival by our in-country manager who will take you to your accommodation and give you a full induction into the area. He/she will also be on call 24/7 and you’ll see them frequently.

Pre-departure you’ll receive comprehensive information about every aspect of your placement and necessary preparations, ranging from what to pack, to visa information, to what to do on your weekend travel in the country. Your safety, well being and happiness throughout your placement are our primary concerns and we will keep in touch with you throughout. International flights not included.

Requirements

• You need to have completed your third year of University.
• We will ask you to submit a portfolio of work showing a mixture of ability and computer work like CAD will be very important.
• The work should be challenging and you should be prepared to receiving training in different elements.
• You need to be prepared to be flexible with the work, able to work with, and get on with, people.
• Lastly, an ability to work as part of a team, but you will also be expected to be able to handle your own work ... self-reliance and independence will help you make the most of this wonderful opportunity!
