To aid this vision we have project partnerships with Fauna & Flora International and the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Fisheries Administration. The marine environment is globally threatened from a number of anthropogenic pressures; the coastline of Cambodia is no exception. Unsustainable fishing practices, trash and tourism-based stressors place pressure on coral reef health and fish stocks upon which local livelihoods depend.

Our Tropical Marine Conservation Programme (TMCP) is the Foundation’s unique project dedicated to conserving Cambodia’s coral reefs. It is expedition oriented, based in the Koh Rong Archipelago, and a fantastic opportunity for overseas volunteers to have a life changing experience. Volunteers will have the opportunity to join our coral reef surveys. You will be given PADI training in scuba diving, training in coral reef ecology and conservation, and will be trained in hands-on first aid through Adventure Lifesigns qualifications.

The Song Saa Foundation is a key organization in the development of Cambodia’s first Marine Protected Area. The TMCP will be providing invaluable biophysical data to the Fisheries Administration of Cambodia in order to assess the success of the proposed marine reserve. This gives volunteers and staff alike a great sense of ownership and pride in the marine conservation work undertaken through the TMCP.

Based in the stunning tropical Koh Rong archipelago, this programme is a fantastic opportunity to gain meaningful research experience while immersing yourself in Cambodia’s rich culture.

Volunteers joining this programme will receive training in:

  • Tropical coastal ecology (inc. coral reef, mangrove and seagrass ecology)
  • Biophysical marine survey methods (with following experience undertaking marine surveys in the Archipelago’s coral reefs)
  • PADI Open Water and Advanced Open Water scuba diving
  • Expedition First Aid
