The Lotus Children’s Home is a place for children in need. Located in Kathmandu, Nepal, we create a caring environment for our children through the generous support of both local and international volunteers.
In addition, we ensure that each of our children receives a proper education, something that we believe is essential to their future.
We believe it is most important for our volunteers to be loving, kind, and open-minded. Leadership skills are also useful, but no experience is required. For our international volunteers, you will find many cultural differences, so in order to better equip you for your time in Nepal we provide language and culture classes during the beginning of your stay. The length of time you wish to volunteer is up to you. We are happy to have both short and long-term volunteers.
How to Volunteer: Simply email us the times that you would like to volunteer with us as well as a brief summery of your past experience. We will email you back and arrange a placement for you. Please include a small sized photo of yourself so that we can find you at the airport when you arrive. Your program fees can be paid once you arrive at the orphanage.
Accommodation: Your accommodation is very flexible. Volunteers can stay either in a guesthouse, with a host family, or in a private rented home. Most of our volunteers choose to stay with a host family, which allows for the most authentic Nepali experience.
Food: Nepali food is both nutritious and delicious. The volunteer will have the opportunity to eat traditional Nepali meals and snacks, which will be provided by NFS. This usually consists of a large breakfast, mid-day snacks, and another large meal in the evening. Hunger will never be a problem for the volunteer – the Nepalese are extraordinarily generous with their portions. A typical Nepali meal includes rice, bread, lentils, vegetable curry and pickles. If you like, you may also eat your own food in your own way.
Time Commitment: You are free to decide how much time you would like to commit during your stay with us, but volunteers typically work between four and six hours a day. Usually this means helping the children to get ready for school in the morning, and also spending some time with the children after they return from school. Typically volunteers play games with the children, help with homework, and help with small projects around the orphanage. We also encourage you to be creative with your time, and welcome any ideas you might have.
Entertainment: Kathmandu is a city that is rich in culture. You will have no trouble finding things to do in the city. During your stay you may also wish to explore some other parts of the country. Nepal has many activities and travel destinations to offer. NFS is able to offer discounted rates for many of these attractions including: rafting, trekking, bungee jumping, jungle safaris and also, discounted plane tickets.
