Africa: Volunteer With Orphans In Lilongwe, Malawi

As in many developing countries, Malawi has extremely poor people living in sub-standard conditions who consequently fall ill through diseases.

General Info

Many of these diseases pregnant mothers had contracted before becoming pregnant. This then leads to birth defects and in a lot of cases the child's mother tends to die and this is why projects like these have emerged throughout Malawi's poorest areas. Volunteers work with the orphaned children helping them to build a brighter future, these are very rewarding projects for both parties.

Why The Need For Volunteers?
The centres needs all the support it can get from volunteers to battle this rising problem. We are looking for volunteers with a love for children and more specifically nurses, nutritionists, occupational therapists, social workers & child psychologists. Ancillary to these needs the centres are requesting tangible products such as nappies, baby and normal blankets, and food donations.

Volunteers Activities
Volunteers will be required to work on an array of different areas within the children’s home. Most will be social care orientated enlighten children on their rights, encouraging and assisting them to speak out on injustice that has been inflicted upon them. Volunteers will also be asked to rescue and rehabilitate abandoned, neglected and abused children and give them support and care. Volunteers will counsel the traumatised victims and take them to hospital when the need arises.

The Required Skills
You must be flexible, use your initiative and have plenty of enthusiasm to face the daily challenges your role will throw at you. A pro active attitude is essential for you and your project to gain the most out of one another. You must use all the skills you have to help enrich your experience and to leave a profound effect on your project. Most importantly it is essential for you to have a love for children and a commitment to the project. Depending on your capabilities and initiative you may find yourself being invited to participate in other events not mentioned in the project specifications.

Local Facilities
The orphanage is based in Lilongwe city. Lilongwe is the second largest city in Malawi but is in fact the capital. Lilongwe had good transport connections with minivans covering all areas of the city. Long Distance buses run from Lilongwe to destinations in East Africa and there are plenty of taxis. As most other developed cities in Africa, Lilongwe has numerous banks, supermarkets, foreign exchange and post offices.

Trip Highlights
To work with under privileged children, to visit the 'Warm Heart of Africa' and to visit the ancient Lake Malawi and its stunning beaches. For the adventurers among you there are many mountains to climb in the south of Malawi, most notably Mt Mulanje which is very popular with many tourists.

Must be over 18 years of age & have a valid passport which must be valid for at least 6 months upon departure from your project country.
