Africa Gap Year: Tanzania Adventure Trip

The Tanzania Adventure Trip gives participants the opportunity to travel and work in East Africa's largest country.

General Info

Participants work in Dar es Salaam in one of the many orphanages & care homes the city has. Volunteers are encouraged to conduct extra activities with the children within the projects whether it is sports or arts and crafts. We encourage volunteers to immerse themselves within the culture to really make the most of their experience. We have combined a project in Dar es Salaam with a travel package and an adventure trip to the historical city of Bagamoyo. Bagamoyo was the most important trading port along the East African coast not only in goods but also in slaves on their way to Zanzibar. Our itinerary below is the standard trip - however once on arrival in Tanzania you can organise to travel to the tropical island of Zanzibar/ Pemba or the Mafia islands! All of these are available to our volunteers. (These islands are well worth a visit if you are interested in snorkelling, scuba diving or just a bit of sun bathing.)

The Tanzania Adventure Itinerary

Day 0 - Arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport (Dar es Salaam), greeted by a Sub Saharan representative and transferred to a hotel.

Day 1 - An induction to the city of Dar es Salaam to make you aware of your surroundings and the local amenities and services in the area. You will receive a tour of the city stopping at the main tourist attractions and places of interest.

Day 2 - Volunteers will be taken to their project to report for the first day of work, there will be a formal introduction with the project staff and you can begin work

Day 3 - 11 - These 9 days will be spent at the project working with the children of the orphanage, conducting daily activities, caring for the children and conducting extra activities including sports activities and arts and crafts. The children will really respond to you so make the most of your time with them. During your free time you will be encouraged to explore 'Dar' as it’s locally known and the surrounding areas including the spectacular tropical beaches.

Day 12 - 14 - Bagamoyo
You will leave 'Dar' in the morning and travel the 45kms north to one of the oldest towns in Tanzania and East Africa. Bagamoyo was once a major port for the slave trade from mainland Africa to the island of Zanzibar. During the slave trade it wasn't uncommon to see hundreds of slaves being herded down the streets chained together. You will be able to immerse yourself in the history and culture of the oldest town in Tanzania. Your guide will show you all the sights and explain to you all about the history of this important settlement
