Snake Cell

Snake Cell has been a self-funded project and has never been supported by any donations!! Except a couple of friends supported it when required.

Snake Cell was commissioned on the World Environment Day 1998, at Chandigarh to disseminate vital information on the subject `Snakes and Snakebite? and about the role of snakes in maintaining ecological balance, to dispel the myths, fear and hatred which people have for these useful animals. Also, educating people about the prevention of snakebite, emergencies arising from snakebite and the managment of snakbite victim and first-aid that is very vital for the treatment.

People seek help from the Snake Cell to remove snakes from their houses, offices, factories etc. So far, we have caught about 950 snakes from houses; including Common Krait (the deadliest Indian snake) which is 15 times more poisonous than a cobra. About 1250 houses were visited to attend calls to rescue snakes till this season.

Indian Volunteers

We often get requests for the membership to join the Snake Cell. We do not have any provision for membership as yet, as we have not registered ourselves as an NGO. Our belief in this regartd is that if anyone who is serious about Nature Conservation efforts and the issue is closer to heart, doesn't need any membership to join hands. So, all are welcome to contribute with their talents, i.e. computer knowledge and skills (software and hardware), painting, sketching, electronics, anything which can help Snake Cell for its activities.

Write to us, we need volunteers when we organise programmes in schools, colleges, or wherever we are requested by public.

Foreign Volunteers

We have a programme for foreign volunteers to work with the Snake Cell in India. If you wish to work with us, we welcome you for snake rescue operations, education programmes in schools colleges, villages etc. If you wish to be part of the Snake Cell, you are welcome. Also, it gives an opportunity to visit different places in India, for which one pays hefty sum as a tourist to a tour operator, otherwise. In our case, you will be charged a reasonable fee which includes your food and stay with Snake Cell, part of which would go to the Snake Cell, @ US$1500 per person for 30 days which includes basic stay and Indian food. click for more details

a). Snake Rescue: You will be part of the snake rescue operations, as we offer FREE service to the public at Chandigarh, 24 hours a day, to rescue snakes from houses and offices. It gets action packed! At night, we are often escorted by police, on our request. After catching snakes, the neighborhood of the house is invited for a brief programme about snakes & snakebite, it is followed by a question & answer session with the public - very interesting!

b). Education Programmes: We often do street programmes, visit schools & colleges, villages etc. In the past, programmes have been done at medical colleges, busniness management institutes, army units, national parks, forest department etc. You could be one of the speakers for such programmes or help in coordinating the programme.
