This is your chance to spend two weeks engrossed in the day-to-day running of a 90,000-acre wildlife conservancy – learn about caring for rescued animals, how conservation agriculture works, the procedures of wildlife research and monitoring, and what it takes to run a K-9 anti-poaching unit. 

 

Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrival and Check-in

  • Book in at The Stables
  • Ol Pejeta Overview and safety orientation.

DAY 2 - DAY 4

Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary

  • Overview of Sweetwaters Chimpanzees Sanctuary
  • Sanctuary hygiene requirements and protocols
  • Chimpanzees escape guidelines
  • Chimpanzee welfare and environmental enrichment protocols
  • Talk about basic veterinary laboratory techniques
  • Tools and techniques used in wild animal capture
  • Drugs used in the immobilization of wild animals and principles of wild animal immobilization
  • Early morning caregiving routines and behind scenes activities at old chimpanzee house
  • Familiarise with the activities at the Visitor’s
  • Centre including the adoption Centre and walk way, among others
  • Visit the chimpanzee platform and participate in cleaning and maintenance activities

DAY 5 - DAY 8

Wildlife Department (northern white rhinos)

  • Management of captive of northern white rhinos and visit the enclosure
  • Wildlife Conservation in a classroom/office
  • Rhino tracking techniques, animal identification and field exposure, i.e. go for the tracking with rangers
  • Feeding and hygiene protocols
  • Participate in daily feeding and hygiene protocols

DAY 9 - DAY 11

Livestock Department

  • Overview of Ol Pejeta livestock activities
  • Slaughter procedure and production chain
  • Production: synchronisation
  • Artificial Insemination & Disease Surveillance

DAY 12 - DAY 14

Operations and Conservation Activities

  • Human-wildlife conflict - This is about issues that arise and how they are dealt with by the Community Development Department
  • Corridor for animals that cross boundaries
  • Fencing problems
  • Patrolling & Radio Communication
  • Lion tracking techniques & animal identification by the EMD
  • Dog Unit-Focus on the importance of dog tracking
  • Helping out in training dogs, grooming and walking them
  • Debrief-Q & A/Open discussion at a camp fire

DAY 15

  • Departure - 9am after breakfast
