Northern Greece Volunteers

We are a coalition of independent volunteers, teams, and small organisations providing humanitarian aid to refugees in Northern Greece.

We are based in and around Thessaloniki, where we contribute to efforts in around 20 refugee camps. Use the links below to find out more and check our urgent volunteer needs.

If you’re able to come to Northern Greece, there are often opportunities for medium and long-term volunteers. Get information about what the expectations of you will be, groups working in the region and apply to volunteer.

There are a fluctuating number of grassroots projects operating throughout the region, which are constantly seeking volunteers to join and support their teams. We regularly need to fill a diverse range of roles, from carrying out food and clothing distribution from the warehouse, to supporting hygiene, shelter, psychosocial support, medical care, and information services.

Help Refugees and Indigo Volunteers help to coordinate volunteers, funding, and aid donations amongst grassroots projects and smaller organisations operating in the Northern Greece. We recognise that it is difficult to independently match your skills and availability with the needs of different projects, so we have tried to bridge the gap, to help volunteers make the most of their skills and experience with projects that have the greatest demand / need for help at the time.

Most of our short-term volunteers work from our warehouse site in western Thessaloniki, where we always need hands to get stuck in the sorting and distribution of donations. Soul Food Kitchen, the Food Project, and the Get Sh*t Done Team are all grassroots projects that also operate from our warehouse site, and are another great way to get involved if you are only here for a short time.

If you can commit to more than 3 weeks and have the relevant skills, we will try to find you a suitable placement with one of our projects.

We currently need volunteers with the following skills / experience:

  • Health workers i.e. qualified doctors, paramedics, nurses, midwives, etc.
  • English and German teachers (including TEFL)
  • Arabic, Farsi, Greek or Kurdish translators,
  • HGV license holders
  • Chefs (or experience managing a kitchen)
  • Skilled labourers (i.e. construction, carpentry, plumbing, engineering, electrics)
  • Lawyers or experience in advocacy

URGENT: SERBIA NEEDS YOU. Our friends / partnering projects in Serbia are in urgent need of support! If you are flexible with where you volunteer, please specify this in your application.
