Malaysia is best known for its beaches, rainforest and a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European cultural influences. You meet people from different cultural backgrounds live together in peace and harmony. Very often you observe a church is right next to a Hindu or Chinese Temples as well as across a Muslim Mosque. A really interesting exploration for volunteers who visit Malaysia for the first time to get the unique Malaysia Cultural Experience. 

You are invited to participate in this program which offers you an unforgettable journey for Orangutan Conservation. You will provide a helping hand in the Orangutan Conservation Program which is designed to protect and preserve orangutans. Assist with various conservation activities and initiatives to protect, care for and save the beatiful intelligent animal.

 

Project Aims

Orangutans have been classified as Critically Endangered on IUCN Red List is highly on our attention to prevent them from extinction. This program aims to promote the conserve the beautiful animals through ex-situ efforts encompassing:

  • Awareness campaigns
  • Education Programs
  • Rehabilitation

 

Typical day

1st Week

Monday Enjoy a tour in the morning followed by your Malaysia Program Orientation in the afternoon. This is a day full of useful information about the Malaysian culture, the Malaysian program while also familiarizing yourself with the local area and amenities

Tuesday You will be taken on a tour around local Churches, Mosques and Temples to gain an insight into the diverse cultures which lives harmoniously. This is followed by Bahasa (local) language lessons in the afternoon which will help you with basic daily conversations

Wednesday Start the day with local cooking lesson followed by community activities (playing with children, cleaning, painting, and conservation awareness discussions) at a homeless center for single mothers in the afternoon

Thursday Learn how to make local handicrafts (making batik, book-marks, wood craft and baskets). This is a great chance to make yourself an authentic souvenir to remember your time in Malaysia and if you’re speedy you can make multiple crafts which are then donated to a local community who are in need these crafts for fundraising

Friday Spend the day visiting a very successful mangrove conversation site while also gaining an insight into the fishing village lifestyle 

 

2nd Week onwards

Monday - Friday: Your day will begin on the project wherein you get involved deep into various activities of the project. The work on this prpoject is physical, and the heat and humidity add extr chanllenging layer to this. You will be carrying out a variety of tasks including husbandry, enrichment, construction and maintenance work. You will be treated as pseudo staff member in the program. You will be required for assistance wherever the need may arise at the sanctuary.

Activities in the sanctuary also involves husbandy, enrichment, upkeep of the sanctuary which may include maintenance and consturction. Volunteers are expected to follow guidelines when working around the orangutans in order to ensure your safety and those of the orangutans.
