South Africa Literacy Volunteers

Immerse yourself in local life and help to improve the literacy of impoverished youngsters. You will give the children one to one help with reading and speaking English, helping to enhance their future prospects.

General Info

The ability to read is an essential skill that some children in South Africa have not had the opportunity to learn. You will play a significant role in improving the children’s abilities and helping to motivate them and get them interested in reading.

Your typical working hours on this project will be from Monday to Friday, 8:30am until 2pm. You’ll be placed with children who need a bit of extra help and spend half an hour’s reading time with each child, twice a week. During this time you’ll be reading to the children and encouraging them to read back to you to improve their skills and confidence.
