Your first two weeks will be spent working at Zoo Negara – in Kuala Lumpur where you’ll get hands-on caring for orang-utans, chimps and other apes! Help with a range of activities including cleaning, feeding and maintenance and keeping the animals stimulated while you gain a deeper insight into the lives of these amazing animals.

The zoo is home to more than 5,000 animals, you may also work with some other residents including; camels, sun bears, pythons and tigers! To ensure safety, your contact with the animals will be supervised, you will need to listen to the zoo keepers to make sure you both learn and stay safe.

Weeks 3 and 4 - Weeks 3 to 4 until September 2011: 2 weeks

Visit wildlife rehabilitation centres that provide a much-needed sanctuary for the orang-utans of Borneo before they are released back into the wild, then it’s off for a week in the jungle as you make your way to the volunteer project at Batang Ai.

During your time in the jungle you will live with the Iban tribe of Sarawak where you’ll gain a unique view of their traditions and culture, and explore the wonders of rainforest on jungle treks.

Weeks 3 and 4 - Weeks 3 to 4 From October 2011 Onwards: 2 weeks

Experience the real jungle life as you spend 2 weeks getting back to basics living in a wildlife sanctuary, among the local tribe; the ‘Orang Sungai’. You’ll help out restoration work to conserve the habitat of orang-utans and take part in data collection that will help to ensure the future preservation of these incredible creatures. There may also be the opportunity to set off into the local community and help with education initiatives centred on conservation awareness.
