A lot them of are family pets that have been abandoned on the street or in country parks, while others have been directly surrendered. We really depend on our dedicated volunteers to ensure that our dogs are well exercised, socialised, trained and happy. At our Tai Po kennels there are usually around 300 medium to large size dogs waiting for adoption at any one time. We are always looking for anyone who is willing to help with dog walking, dog grooming and socialising. Help is especially needed during our weekday shift

Plus at our Mini Homing Centre in Ap Lei Chau, where we keep a number of smaller dogs awaiting adoption, we need more volunteers to walk, groom and socialise the dogs, as well as generally helping in the store and the many jobs that need to be done. No experience is necessary, all you need is a love of dogs, a responsible attitude and the willingness to get your hands (and clothes) dirty!

The next requirement is for all new volunteers to complete an orientation either at Tai Po or Ap Lei Chau . This includes a tour of the kennel, important safety information and an introduction to some of our dogs. There will be an opportunity to walk at least one dog with help on hand from our experienced volunteers.

Attendance at this orientation is mandatory and a fee of $100 will be charged, payable at the start of the class. A proportion of this fee will go towards HKDR’s operating costs which ultimately helps us to save more dogs lives. In addition each new volunteer will receive a HKDR Volunteer T shirt when attending for their first Dog Walking Shift.

The minimum age for volunteer applicants is 18 years old.

Volunteering with your Company, School or Group

If you represent a company, school or group we would love to hear from you about how we can work together. HKDR encourages groups to volunteer at our Homing Centres, and we can provide a varied selection of volunteering activities to suit your needs. Everything from walking the dogs to raising funds to help care for the dogs, as well as helping with raising awareness about responsible pet ownership – HKDR can meet your needs. We have a minimum age of 18-years-old for dog-walkers, but we have great opportunities for children as young as 8 years old to learn about HKDR and what we do to help abandoned dogs and puppies in Hong Kong.
