Live and volunteer on spectacular Mafia Island, a protected marine eco park.  Work as a marine oe wildlife conservationist or an English teacher at a local junior school.

In 1996, in collaboration with the WWF, Frontier helped set up a protected marine park on Mafia Island, a remote and beautiful island in Tanzania.  Since then, we have set up and managed a variety of conservation and community development programs on the island, with the aim of safeguarding biodiversity and ecosystem integrity while building sustainable livelihoods for poorer communities. Frontier’s Tanzania Marine Conservation and Diving project has spearheaded this drive ever since, with countless peer-reviewed science publications as well as survey work which has helped provide baseline data for grass-roots conservation operations.

We also have a terrestrial wildlife conservation programme on the island where volunteers will live on a spectacular beach camp, learn conservation surveying techniques and help to gather survey data to monitor endangered species and contribute to their ongoing survival. Teaching placements are also available, where volunteers teach English to local kids and can also earn their TEFL certificate while on the placement. Mafia Island is a remote and spectacular location, with marine life ranging from Sweetlips and Groupers to Hippos and Whale Sharks.  You can join the volunteer beach camp, learn surveying techniques get PADI qualified while diving on pristine reefs and contributing to the ongoing conservation of the area.  Visit Frontier’s website for more details and to apply.
