Marine Conservation volunteering in South Africa

Company : Deep Blue Conservation
Location : Sodwana Bay
Duration: 2 weeks to 3 months
Approx Costs: 1000 to 3000+ £ Pound (UK)

Dive at one of the most amazing reef complexes in the world while contributing to marine conservation research in Sodwana Bay, South Africa.

The Deep Blue Reef Conservation volunteer program was developed to allow volunteers to get first-hand experience collecting data for marine conservation databases while diving this incredible 50 km reef complex.

Volunteers will stay on our beautiful camp situated in the coastal forests of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During their stay, volunteers will help collect data on various marine species to contribute to marine conservation efforts. This data may be as per requests from scientists, to contribute to citizen science databases or our own nudibranch database.

The volunteers will also play a part in building up the local rural community of Sodwana through various community development projects, these projects allow volunteers to immerse themselves in the culture of the Zulu people and learn more about South African heritage.

During weekends volunteers are free to explore the beautiful untouched town of Sodwana Bay as well as the surrounding area. There are various activities to enjoy, including hikes, quad bike tours, Big Five game drives or simply just relaxing at the beach or the camp swimming pool. Volunteers can also enjoy trips to Lake Sibaya or local view points for sundowners and a local 'braai', known more commonly as a barbeque outside South Africa.

Whether you are looking for a career in the scientific field, a fun gap year or just to get out of the hustle and bustle of the city life, this is the project for you!
