Provide vital teaching assistance to under-resourced schools in Victoria Falls. Help deliver extra lessons using specially-developed literacy packs and have an immediate impact on education levels. Also get involved with lessons in conservation, health, values and Thinking Green.

As a teaching volunteer on this rural school literacy programme you will provide much-needed and very hands-on teaching assistance to the under-resourced schools in the Jabulani area of Victoria Falls. You will help teachers in the classroom plus help with extra lessons, after-school clubs, homework and sports.

Using a curriculum delivered in a fun and engaging way, this programme introduces children to their wildlife heritage, educates them and gives them the tools and skills they need to meet life's challenges.

Teaching professionals have worked with local schoolteachers and education experts to develop a literacy pack which is used by volunteers on this programme to enhance the children's educational experience. It aims to educate children in an interactive and fun way and explores areas such as cultural differences, life sciences, the environment, health and values and "Thinking Green". On this teaching programme, volunteers will work in a rural school in the Victoria Falls area of Zimbabwe and will also enjoy exploring one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World!

Highlights

1. Working with the teachers - acting as a classroom assistant and giving one-to-one support to children who are either struggling or are advancing more quickly than the rest of the class. You will see an immediate impact of the extra attention on the children's reading, writing and mathematics.

2. Taking your own lessons and study sessions with a small group of children. You will be given teaching packs and study aids to cover each area of the curriculum.

3. Cultural exchange - giving talks about your own country, your home, work and families - bring pictures and maps! This is a good time to bond with the children and also learn a little more about their home life.

4. Getting involved with the community and school gardens.

5. Take children on nature walks and into conservation areas to show them the importance of protecting the animals and environment around them.

6. Experience a real taste of Zimbabwean culture, food and hospitality! Experience Africa's Adventure Capital, Victoria Falls town, visit Hwange National Park and even have the opportunity to do a day trip to Botswana.

This project is suitable for families who wish to volunteer together as well as individuals or groups of adults.
