Be a wildlife conservation volunteer in Malawi, the Warm Heart of Africa. Get involved with two projects dedicated to uniting wildlife and communities.

Care for rescued animals in Malawis only wildlife sanctuary or get back to nature as you live in the heart of a tranquil game reserve.

Join one of our wildlife volunteer programmes in Malawi and help orphaned and abandoned animals in their rehabilitation and eventual release back into the wild. Choose between working in Malawi's only accredited wildlife sanctuary or go straight into the bush and live on a 2,000 hectare private game reserve, home to many of the sanctuary's released animals.

Malawi Wildlife Sanctuary

Give animals the best chance for rehabilitation and release back into the wild as you live and work in the heart of Lilongwe, on a tranquil 500 acre wildlife reserve, home to free-roaming wildlife as well as those within the sanctuary. As well as learning about and caring for orphaned and injured wildlife, volunteers also take part in wildlife research projects, animal rehabilitation and wildlife release.

There are just under 200 resident animals including primates, carnivores, antelope, reptiles and birds. Most are rescued orphans or were victims of the illegal bushmeat and pet trade, others have been injured in snares, hit by cars or stoned by local villagers. Thanks to the state-of-the-art vet clinic, orphan care programme, experienced animal care team and dedicated volunteers, the majority of intakes can be managed on site.

This is an amazing opportunity to get hands on with wildlife, working towards their eventual release back into their natural habitat.

Whatever your reasons for volunteering - if you want to make a difference to the lives of rescued animals, learn new skills, immerse yourself in a new way of life or simply love wildlife, this programme will definitely offer what you are looking for.

Malawi Conservation Experience

This wildlife conservation programme is a unique project which showcases how conservation can benefit local people as well as animals. The 2,000 hectare reserve is relatively small, so every volunteer makes a huge contribution towards achieving the project goals. Volunteers make a real difference to the future of Malawi’s wildlife, and are part of something very special.  Enjoy the experience of a lifetime and take home memories and friendships that will last forever.

Get involved in all aspects of game park management, from game counts and individual animal monitoring to wetland regeneration, tree planting and reserve maintenance. Learn wildlife observation, identification and tracking skills and help develop a robust wildlife management plan for the park. Volunteers work closely with permanent staff members and get a truly holistic game park experience.

The reserve is closely linked with the Malawi Wildlife Sanctuary and many rehabilitated animals from the Sanctuary have been successfully released onto the reserve to live the rest of their lives in the wild. We encourage volunteers to spend time on both projects to see conservation from two different but very important perspectives.
