Big Beyond

We're facilitating incredible experiences for international volunteers in rural Uganda - a beautiful, remote and rural region known as the Gorilla Highlands. We also have opportunities for adventurous volunteers in the South Omo, Ethiopia.

Here's a quick overview into our Conservation & Development Programme in rural Uganda...

This programme in remote and beautiful southwest Uganda encompasses a range of projects aiming to integrate the conservation of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park with the sustainable development of its local community. Bwindi is famously home to the rare mountan gorilla and although it's a relatively successful conservation story considering the rise in gorilla families, the community have been somewhat forgotten.

Without genuine support of the local community, for a good reason, the rich forest ecosystem will have no future. Local people need sustainable development that consider their surroundings. On the other side of the coin, the Batwa and Bakiga tribes residing on the forest's new boundaries also deserve to be part of its conservation, tourism-related opportunities, and the chance to understand the importance and immense benefits of protecting the forest for them and this planet.

Do I need experience?

No - but you do need to want something out of the ordinary. It's our job and passion to design unique plrogrammes based on individual levels of experience.

Our volunteers need to be concerned about the bigger picture, willing to work enthusiastically, take on challenges, be open-minded, adaptable to new cultures and remote places, prepared to commit to respecting the local community and have a can-do attitude. It helps to have a good sense of humour too!

How long can I stay?

You can join the team from just two weeks right up to six months. We recommend at least one month, but if you're looking to take more leadership in the projects, three to four months is perfect. We value any amount of time you're able to contribute and we'll ensure it's rewarding and productive whatever your timeframe.
