ANOPA Project was formed in august 2010 in Cape Coast, Ghana under the auspices of the Northrheine Westphalia Government as a sports for development project. ANOPA uses various sports such swimming, soccer, taekwondo, volley, basketball, tennis and handball.
Generally Sports can be used to mobilise people for community engagements and community outreach programs. In this way ANOPA through sports is able to undertake community clean up exercises and education on sanitation and the environment under one of its programs dubbed Nothingleavesearth. Since 2016, the administration of the Project was taken over by ANOPA e.V from Germany made up of past international volunteers of the Project in Ghana and ANOPA -Ghana as the project coordinating unit in Ghana. This became necessary after the sponsorship package from the Landessportbund (LSB)-Germany elapsed in 2015.
ANOPA Project-Ghana receives volunteers from all over the world to help push its sports for development agenda. In ANOPA we believe in the idea of youth for youth/one world one youth for all where every child must be given the opportunity to play and be a better person within the society.
ANOPA project activities have a lot of social impact on the communities they operate in. For instance drowning is a major problem in Cape Coast where children and the youth lose their lives most of the time especially during festive seasons like christmas and easter. As a result of this unfortunate development ANOPA gives swimming lessons to the children and the youth within the Cape Coast municipality and again train trainers to teach more children how to swim to reduce drowning in and around Cape Coast where the sea is dominant.
Other sports are able to help the project mobilise community sensitisation workshops on communicable diseases and ensure environmental cleanliness and community development. As a result the Project organises a massave clean up exercise after each sports session once every september within the entire Cape Coast Municipality.September marks the most popular fetu afahye(Cape Coast Festival) which attracts a lot of tourists and foreigners to the City therefore the need to ensure the city is clean.
Both local and international volunteers join in the support for community development through sports. As part of its support services to volunteers, volunteers are accommodated in a high speed internet building with a 24/7 security and utilities (water and electricity),spacious compound with a mini bar/rasturant where volunteers can relax and enjoy.
