Shimongwe Wildlife Veterinary Experience activities offer you excellent variety of wildlife species. There is opportunity to join the daily activities of our experienced wildlife vets in the field, treating and handling wildlife. Much of the work can be related to other wildlife industries such as game capture and relocation, thereby maximising your exposure to surrounding reserves and the wildlife's natural habitat.

  • Veterinary procedures in the field and clinic
  • Game capture assistance, immobilising animals in the field using darting

The veterinary work is essential to the welfare and protection of rare and endangered species of Africa. 

You may be working with animals ranging from endangered and rare antelope, buffalo, giraffe, rhino and occasionally lions, elephant and leopard. Species focus will vary depending on the vet, and the animals requiring treatment. 

Start Dates

Placements start Tuesdays at Johannesburg airport. Most vets take volunteers between March-September, but there are a few limited places for mid-January till November

Costs / Benefits

from £2,250 excluding flights / £3,100 including return flights from London Heathrow to Johannesburg. Placement costs include meals, accommodation, transfers from Johannesburg airport, full ground support, T Shirt

Requirements

Some vets will only work with veterinary students, while others are happy to accept volunteers without previous experience.
