Behind the scenes experience in one of southern Africa's prime Big 5 Game Reserves. 

Phinda Wildlife Research Project takes place at Phinda Game Reserve, located in Kwa-Zulu Natal, East coast of South Africa.

You the volunteer will be working along side the research team of Rangers and Researchers, who are under Reserve Managment instructions. Phinda is a big success story, with many species being reintroduced over 20 years in a Big 5 environment. The monitoring and research continues, in order for conservation of the reserve to be of high standards and relevence.

This will include:

  • Monitoring and identifying both white and black Rhino. This will develop a database, detailing the population, its number, health and movements throughout the reserve.
  • You will be conducting behavioural studies and population statistics of the reserves predator population
  • The main focus of the predator research will be focusing on Lion and Cheetah
  • Movements, species dynamics and health are all part of the work you, the volunteer will be doing.
  • Assist with other Big 5 research such as the Elephant population monitoring.

Start Dates

Placements start in South Africa on a Tuesday and end on a Wednesday

Costs / Benefits

Placement costs start at £2,860 including flights from London or £1,980 excluding flights. Placement costs include transfers from Johannesburg airport, accommodation, meals and funding for the research.
