Conservation on horseback with tracking rhino and predators in a wonderful reserve in the greater Kruger area of South Africa

Set in the wild bushland on the Blue Canyon reserve in South Africa. Six ex-racehorses are used to monitor and track the black and white rhino.  

Volunteers will..

  • Join the mounted anti-poaching unit to patrol the reserve on horseback
  • Assist with game counts and species movement studies
  • Track and monitor white rhino
  • Study predator movements and behaviour
  • Be responsible for equine husbandry and care
  • Help with reserve management and maintenance


The nature of the horse makes them ideal partners in moving through the bush and aiding reserve management. This helps to ensure game are less stressed and by their nature alerting you to young and elusive animals. This project gives a unique view of the reality behind conserving rhinos while your efforts will contribute to the ongoing effort of rehabilitating ex-racehorses. 


Start Dates

Project runs year round. Placements start on Tuesdays at Johannesburg airport

Costs / Benefits

Costs start from £1,955 without flights, £2,835 including return flights from London Heathrow to Johannesburg.
Placement costs include meals, accommodation, transfers from Johannesburg airport, full ground support, funding for the project and a T Shirt


Minimum age 17. Experienced riders only.
