Volunteer Mauritius

Mauritius is located about 2000 kilometres from the east coast of Africa and 6000 kilometres to the west of the Australian city of Perth, Mauritius is situated in the Indian Ocean. Everyone will fall in love with Mauritius and the way it embodies paradise on earth.  There are a limited number of opportunities all over the country and by applying you will get to:

  • Experience a luxury destination
  • Escape the tourist resorts and do something rewarding
  • See and help exotic animals
  • Once you see the beaches you won't want to leave
  • Make new friends
  • This is one of the most spectacular places to volunteer in Africa

How You Can Help

There are lots of rewarding and meaningful ways to experience the spectacular island of Mauritius, with One World 365 you can apply to help wildlife, conservation and projects working with people. Placements can be joined throughout the year and you can apply today through our website. If you are looking to combine experiences, you might also want to volunteer in Madagascar - this is another exotic destination, much largr in size with more programs available and also located close to Mauritius.

Community Development

There are also community projectswhere you can help as a classroom assistant supporting children with learning disabilities. Volunteers are also required to assist those with mental and physical disabilities in care homes on the island. Tasks can include teaching English and IT skills to the island’s large Chagos refugee group. Volunteers will usually be based in the island’s capital of Port Louis and these roles would suit those with a responsible and positive nature.

Conservation

Conservation projects in Mauritius include helping with beach clean ups, renovating buildings and educating local people and tourists. If you are looking to experience nature at its best then take the time to spend time exploring and helping in the Mauritius’ Black River Gorges National Park. This protected reserve accounts for approximately 2% of the island and volunteer trips through the winding jungle roads will bring such rewards as the Alexandra Waterfall at Chamarel and the amazing Seven Coloured Earths sand dunes. The island’s beaches are, of course, a major attraction for international visitors and the white sand Grand Baie beach is one of the most beautiful. Île aux Cerfs should not be missed if you get some free time as the beaches on this little island are the best in the world.

Protect Dolphins & Marine Wildlife

There are projects available where you can help protect the island’s dolphin and whale populations. On marine research projects you can work as a marine biology research assistant where you will be involved in data collection as well as monitoring the behaviour and population of dolphins, whales and turtles. This role also includes educating the public on conservation and marine mammals as well as helping to change future legislation to ensure cetacean sustainability. Full training will be provided over a two to eight-week involvement with the research project. One organisation we also recommend is the P.A.W.S. wildlife organisation which recruits volunteers to help dogs and cats on the islands.

How to Apply

You can search projects and organisations on our website and apply for a life memorable experience. You will usually be required to pay for flights. For more options view our volunteering abroad directory.
