Best Ancient Ruins to Visit in the World

Best Ancient Ruins to Visit in the World

Are you thinking about going travelling and want to visit incredible ancient ruins? We have put together a list of destinations where you can see the most impressive ruins in the world.

There is a lot of choice from exploring jungles in Latin America to exploring countries in Asia. Everyone has different opinions and favourite ruins to visit but here is our top recommendations which will hopefully give you ideas for your next adventure...

1. Tikal, Guatemala

Guatemala might be off the beaten track and overlooked in favor of other countries like Mexico and Costa Rica in this region, but we highly recommend planning a trip where you can see the amazing ruins in Tikal.

Located deep in the jungle the setting is unlike many other ruins in the world, and the best part is most of the temples are still undiscovered and being renovated. You can climb to the top of most of the temples and the view is stunning. Expect a lot less tourists here than others ruins for example Chickenitza in Mexico and this just adds the the magic.

The best way to see this area is joining a tour from the nearby town of Flores although you can travel independently to the area. Search group tours of Guatemala to see Tikal for yourself.

2. Machu Picchu, Peru

Machu Picchu is probably the most famous ruins in the world and the treks to get you here are almost as legendary. Over 20,000 people every year make the journey to see Machu Picchu and we imagine few are disappointed. The setting is spectacular, high in the Andes surrounded by mountains and the ruins are still is quite good condition considering the location.

If you would like to book a Machu Picchu tour you will need to book far in advance, spaces are limited and trips can book up quick. You can also cheat and take a train which is an easy and scenic way to view these world famous ruins. View our Peru group tours for options.

3. Ankor, Cambodia

Angkor in Cambodia is a stunning collection of temples, the most famous and iconic being Angkor Watt. There are 70 temples in a 50 miles square area located near the popular city of Siem Riep. We highly recommend waking up early and going to see sunrise at Angkor Watt, it is a mystical experience and really amazing to see the temples come into light.

There are lots of Cambodia tours available, some people visit for a day whilst you could easily spend a good few days wandering round this vast area. The Ta Prohm temple, made famous by the film Tomb Raider is highly recommended to see, there are huge tree roots growing out of the ruins.

4. Chickenitza, Mexico

Chickenitza is one of the most famous ancient ruins and temple in the world and an essential place to visit in if you are going to travel in Mexico. This is one of the best Mayan ruins in Latin America!

Day tours can be arranged from popular resorts like Cancun and Playa Del Carmen and you will be left spellbound by the ruins. The main temple has been recently restored but there are still lots of other old original ruins to wander around.

We recommend arriving early if you are independently making your way here, the later you arrive the more tourists there will be. During summer the whole area gets very busy, take sun cream in summer as its get very hot and there isn't much shade. Search Mexico tours today.

5. Olympia, Greece

The ruins in Olympia, Greece are the original birthplace of the modern Olympic Games. Tourists and visitors often describe the ruins as stunning and we recommend wandering around the site with a local tour guide who will be able to provide information and history to the buildings and ruins.

A visit to the museum is also highly recommended before going to the main ruins, you will be able to get an understanding of the layout and different areas were used during the games. The Statue of Hermes is our top thing to see here and on a group tour of Greece you will see the very best locations.
