Gamer Ranger, Field Guide Training & FGASA Courses

Field guide training courses vary in lenght and a lot are located in game reserves in South Africa. By doing a level one field guide course you will gain hands on work experience and information / knowledge about game reserves. These courses are really for people seeking a fresh challenege or career and provide a great chance to live abroad in spectacular settings, you can also join volunteer programs or go on adventure wildlife safaris too.

Please note no prior experience is needed to apply for game ranger courses but you should have a passion for wildlife and the environment. An an international drivers license and registration with the FGASAis needed though. On game ranger programs you will learn about the following subjects: Field guiding as a Profession, help creating a guided nature experience, geology, astronomy, weather and climate, ecology, taxonomy, biomes, botany and grasses, arthropods, amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds, mammals and animal behaviour revision and introduction to conservation management. You will learn about wildlife / environmental conservation and survival skills, get a greater understanding of the African bush, how to manage game farms and at the end of a course you will be required to take a practical and theoretical examination. If you pass the exam will be given a certificate and an entry-level qualification in field guiding. Game ranger courses should include accommodation, meals, study materials, training, FGASA / THETA assessment, first aid courses and 4x4 off road driving courses.
